As a seasoned movie critic with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen countless films that have left me feeling like a kid in a candy store… and then there are those rare gems that leave me craving more. Pixar’s “Inside Out” franchise is one such gem, and after two masterful installments, I find myself eagerly anticipating the next chapter.
Pixar frequently brainstorms concepts for their films, presenting a variety of options initially. Yet, some exceptional ideas may be discarded in favor of timing or compatibility issues, as demonstrated with the Inside Out series.
Following the success of two blockbuster films, it’s evident that Pixar has a strong grasp on global storytelling. While they’ve passed on numerous intriguing concepts for their last two Inside Out productions, a promising idea never goes unused at Pixar. This is why a concept initially discarded could be revisited for the prospective Inside Out 3 movie.
What Was The Idea?
In the development of Inside Out 2, a concept called Procrastination Land was considered but eventually discarded by Pixar. As Kelsey Mann, the director, shared with ComicBook.com, this idea revolved around a place where procrastination reigned supreme and was always under construction, much to the frustration of Anger who kept asking when it would be completed. Despite its comedic potential, they couldn’t find a suitable place for it within the storyline at that time. Mann hinted that this concept might still be utilized in future projects due to its humorous aspects.
Kelsey found the concept intriguing with promising possibilities, but they couldn’t find a way to incorporate it into Riley’s story for the last two films. However, if Pixar gives the go-ahead for Inside Out 3, there’s a chance this idea could reappear. The fact that Kelsey expressed interest in utilizing it down the line indicates that this concept remains viable, demonstrating that ideas conceived at Pixar have an enduring future, though their implementation may occur later on.
Why Inside Out 3 Should Use It
Pixar could find great potential in this concept, as it offers numerous creative avenues not only for exploring emotions but also delving into Riley’s maturing life. Given that she was made older for the sequel, there is a strong possibility that her development will continue in Inside Out 3. This could be an ideal time to introduce the concept when Riley is an older teenager, a stage where many individuals often struggle with procrastination. Whether it’s about completing assignments, seeking employment, or managing daily life, this issue is familiar to many and may resonate particularly well with those watching the film who are going through similar experiences at that time.
I can’t help but admire Pixar for making Riley more relatable in the sequel, particularly for her age group. The character of Anxiety and the storyline she carried were incredibly powerful because of this. Now, imagine if Procrastination Land, though not a specific character, could have had the same impact on people. This could resonate with adults reflecting on their past or dealing with similar issues through their children, or even younger viewers currently navigating those challenges. A peek into this realm could be incredibly powerful, but it also offers plenty of comedic potential. By taking Riley to diverse mental landscapes, Procrastination Land might transform every day as her thoughts wander to various spots, continually throwing her emotions into new predicaments.
How Could The Emotions React
Procrastination Land is a great idea because of how each individual emotion could react to it. It’s not a place Pixar would have to rush through, as they would spend plenty of time allowing the emotions to feel it. Kelsey already gave an example of how Anger could respond, and the fact that Procrastination Land could always change would lead to him becoming even more frustrated. Joy would likely want to try to pull Riley out of it to become focused on whatever was happening in her life at the time, which could create a lesson for that character in learning that sometimes it’s okay to procrastinate, while other times there’s a need for focus. Each emotion could help make that happen and come together to do so, continuing the teaching lessons that have been provided in the previous two films.
It’s encouraging to know that Pixar recognizes the potential of this area for ‘Inside Out 3’, implying they might proceed with it. However, their creative team thinking it’s fantastic isn’t enough; the idea must have significant scope to progress and inject fun into the movie. The vast possibilities make this an exciting prospect as Pixar thrives in such imaginative worlds, particularly within the ‘Inside Out’ franchise.
