Insider Leak: Original Nier Creators Tease Epic New Game Project in the Works!

Summary

  • The original Nier creators are collaborating on a new project, and many believe it could be a new entry in the series.
  • Square Enix recently celebrated Nier’s 15th anniversary with a livestream, teasing a new novel, upcoming concerts, and merch.

In a collaboration, the pioneering minds behind the spin-off series of the Drakengard franchise are working on a new project, leading many to speculate it might be a third primary Nier title. The initial Nier game came out in 2010, but it was its 2017 sequel, Nier: Automata, that truly established the series’ prominence. Following this, a 2021 remaster of the original game, titled Nier Replicant, helped new fans understand the origins of the spin-off series, and Nier Reincarnation was launched on mobile platforms in 2021. However, this mobile version ceased operations in 2024.

This year marks the 15th anniversary of the popular Nier series, and to commemorate this milestone, Square Enix held a two-hour livestream a few weeks ago. Many fans were anticipating updates on the future of the cherished action series, but instead, Square announced the launch of a special 15th anniversary website for Nier. This site acts as a central source of information about an upcoming online novel titled “Undecided Option,” concert dates for the Nier: Orchestra, new merchandise, and other exciting announcements. The livestream concluded with a 20-minute musical performance paying tribute to Nier’s iconic soundtrack.

As a passionate Nier fan, I can’t help but feel a spark of excitement when I hear whispers about the creative minds behind the spinoff series joining forces on a secret project. Renowned games insider Genki has hinted at an article by Famitsu where series producer Yosuke Saito confirmed that the directors of the Nier games, Yoko Taro, musical composer Keiichi Okabe, and former PlatinumGames designer Takahisa Taura are collaborating again on an undisclosed venture. Though we don’t have definitive information yet, it’s got me thinking – could this be a new chapter in the Nier saga? Only time will tell!

Original Nier Creatives Working Together on New Game

In the realm of intellectual property rights, both Drakengard and Nier are under Square Enix’s ownership. Consequently, if a potential new Nier game were to be created, Taro, Okabe, and Taura would need to collaborate with Square Enix as their publisher. The primary hurdle lies in finding a suitable studio for development since PlatinumGames appears to be preoccupied with their ongoing projects. Notably, Taura has recently established his own studio, Eel Game Studio, following his departure from Platinum. Given that he’s currently focusing on building up his new studio, it seems unlikely for Taura to work on an external project. As such, there’s a strong possibility that the enigmatic Yoko Taro’s upcoming game could be developed at Eel Game Studio, although this is merely conjecture.

If it turns out that the upcoming Nier game is being developed by Eel Game Studio, we can expect it to be released several years down the line since they’re probably still in the process of hiring staff. However, a short, 30-second CGI trailer might not be unheard of this year. In the interim, there’s a possibility that Square Enix could launch a remastered Drakengard trilogy, as the original games are still exclusive to PlayStation 2 and 3 systems.
