Insomniac’s Approach to Villains Could Be a Boon for Marvel’s Wolverine

Insomniac's Approach to Villains Could Be a Boon for Marvel's Wolverine

Highlights

  • Marvel’s Wolverine could feature multiple iconic villains, following Insomniac’s pattern of dual antagonists in previous games.
  • Mister Sinister may not be the only villain in store, with leaked documents hinting at potential appearances from characters like Sabretooth or Mystique.
  • Possibility of Gambit’s unique storyline being explored, as well as potential involvement of Marauders, in Marvel’s Wolverine alongside Mister Sinister.

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of villains and antagonists that have left indelible marks on the gaming landscape. With Insomniac Games taking the helm for Marvel’s Wolverine, I’ve got high hopes for this upcoming title.

For the main antagonist of Insomniac’s version of Wolverine, there are numerous impressive choices available. As a key figure among the X-Men, Wolverine has encountered a variety of villains throughout his career, from well-known figures like Magneto, to lesser-known adversaries such as Silver Samurai. If Insomniac continues in the vein of its Spider-Man series, any choice for Marvel’s Wolverine as its primary foe is likely to result in a memorable representation in the end.

From the leaked documents following last year’s unauthorized Insomniac hack, it seems strongly suggested that Mister Sinister could become Wolverine’s primary antagonist at Marvel. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean he will be the sole villain; given Insomniac’s history, it’s likely there may be other adversaries as well.

Mister Sinister Probably Won’t Be The Only Villain in Insomniac’s X-Men

Insomniac’s Track Record Shows a Penchant for Dual Villains

In the Marvel universe’s debut for Insomniac Games (the creators behind 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man), Mr. Negative and some well-known Sinister Six members were prominently featured in pre-release promotions. However, upon playing the game, it became clear that Mr. Negative wasn’t the sole main villain – Doc Ock’s backstory unfolded throughout the narrative instead.

In the sequel to Marvel’s Spider-Man last year, the narrative shared a resemblance with its unique plotline. For roughly two-thirds of the film, Kraven the Hunter served as the main antagonist, eliminating key members from Spider-Man’s rogues gallery. However, towards the climax of Spider-Man 2, Venom transformed completely, engulfing Harry Osborn and attempting to convert New York City into a Symbiote utopia for himself.

In the game Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which is shorter compared to its predecessors, there were two primary antagonists. The Tinkerer took on the role of the main villain, while Roxxon/Prowler served as the ongoing menace that fueled the storyline and action throughout the game. Given Insomniac’s recent pattern, it appears plausible that Marvel’s Wolverine will have multiple main adversaries.

Villains Who Could Accompany Mister Sinister in Insomniac’s X-Men

As a die-hard fan, I’ve been thrilled by the rumors suggesting Sabretooth, Mystique, Omega Red, and Lady Deathstrike could feature in Marvel’s Wolverine. However, it’s plausible that these characters might not function as primary antagonists, but rather as secondary characters or even occasional bosses. The game’s potential second main villain, the one who could give Wolverine a run for his money, may still be under wraps and yet to be leaked at all.

If this scenario holds true, it means there are numerous X-Men antagonists suitable for teaming up with Mister Sinister in Marvel’s Wolverine. Among the most fitting candidates would be members of the Marauders, a band of mercenaries engineered by Mister Sinister to pursue and eliminate problematic mutants and groups. Notable choices from the Marauders could include Malice, who has the ability to control minds, or Greycrow, a relentless master of mechanical manipulation.

Another interesting pick – especially in light of recent pieces of Marvel media like X-Men ’97 – would be Gambit. Gambit’s uncontrollable Mutant powers led him to seek out Mister Sinister, who after removing a piece of his brain tissue, forced him into service as the Marauder’s leader. It’s not an origin that many newer fans are aware of, and it’s a storyline that could give Insomniac an incredibly unique villain for Marvel’s Wolverine.
