The following contains mild spoilers for Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
I think revealing Venom in the trailer for *Marvel’s Spider-Man 2* right after announcing *Marvel’s Wolverine* lessened the impact of the game’s story and its surprises. It heavily hinted that Venom would be the main villain challenging Kraven, which felt predictable given the symbiote’s appearance in the first *Marvel’s Spider-Man* game. Honestly, I wasn’t very impressed with the story in *Marvel’s Spider-Man 2*, and a lot of my issues stem from how Venom was handled.

After the release of *Marvel’s Spider-Man 2*, players discovered a short playable section featuring Venom with destructive gameplay in Oscorp, culminating in a boss battle against Kraven in Times Square. This sparked a lot of discussion about whether Insomniac Games would develop a full, standalone Venom game. Recent leaks suggest that such a game is still planned, though these rumors should be treated with caution. Despite the potential excitement, I’m not convinced a Venom game makes sense given the story of *Marvel’s Spider-Man 2*.
Insomniac’s Venom Game Rumors are as Hefty as They are Problematic

Even though *Marvel’s Spider-Man 2* came out just a couple of years ago, fans are eagerly awaiting news about a potential Venom game. The first *Spider-Man* game had extra story content with ‘The City That Never Sleeps,’ but *Spider-Man 2* didn’t receive any, making a Venom game highly anticipated. According to MP1st, Insomniac Games is reportedly still working on it, and there are rumors about what the game might include.
- A half-sequel comparable to Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.
- Eddie Brock as its protagonist and Cletus Kasady (Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s Flame cult leader, fated to become Carnage) as its antagonist.
- An Anti-Venom symbiote that’s different and more comic-accurate than the one Peter Parker currently possesses.
- A release date potentially landing it somewhere in 2027, while Marvel’s Wolverine is apparently slated for a 2026 launch.

Okay, so it looks like we might get a Venom game around 2027, but that probably means Spider-Man 3 won’t hit shelves until 2030 *at the earliest*. And honestly, if Insomniac starts working on X-Men stuff, it could be even later! It makes sense for Venom to come out after Wolverine and *before* Spider-Man 3 – maybe the Venom story could lead right into the next Spider-Man game. But I’m a little worried about how they’ll make a whole Venom game work, story-wise. It really depends on what they did with Venom in Spider-Man 2 and how much of an impact he’s going to have on the series overall.
A Venom Game Has a Lot of Missing Lore to Account for

I don’t think it feels natural for Eddie to suddenly appear, especially since he was only mentioned in a brief note from Peter’s time at the Daily Bugle. We also have no idea if Eddie would even be a good match for the symbiote, considering we don’t know anything about his character within this Spider-Man universe.
Furthermore, since he doesn’t have the same deep connection to the symbiote that creates Venom as seen in the comics, Eddie Brock isn’t essential to the story anymore. It seems anyone could potentially become Venom, just like Harry Osborn did initially when he first bonded with the symbiote to heal himself.

It’s strange that Eddie Brock would get his own Anti-Venom symbiote, especially since Peter Parker already has one. Will Martin Li show off how incredibly powerful he is by giving it to Eddie, or will Peter’s symbiote be absorbed into Eddie’s? Whatever happens, I have a feeling I won’t like it. I’m also annoyed that Peter still has a symbiote, and that he, Miles, and Mary Jane don’t seem to think it’s a problem.
I would have preferred if Venom’s story had been told as a separate, smaller game instead of being integrated into *Marvel’s Spider-Man 2*. This would have allowed Kraven to remain a strong villain instead of feeling like an afterthought. Similar to how Martin Li’s Mr. Negative became a secondary, more sympathetic character in the first *Spider-Man* game when the focus shifted to Doctor Octopus and the Sinister Six, I was disappointed that Kraven went from being the main threat in *Marvel’s Spider-Man 2* to being quickly killed off after Peter gave Harry the symbiote. The sudden symbiote invasion of New York felt rushed and overshadowed Kraven’s storyline.

This also addresses a concern I had with the way Carnage was handled in *Marvel’s Spider-Man 2*. The Flame side quest cleverly builds to the reveal that Cletus Kasady is the leader of the cult, and he only gets a symbiote at the very end of that quest. However, the sequel doesn’t include anything that hints at or sets up a future conflict or interaction between Venom and Carnage.

The game ends with Peter and Yuri Watanabe (now Wraith) in a strained partnership, hinting at a future team-up when Cletus Kasady returns. However, if the game doesn’t adequately explain the connection between Eddie Brock and Cletus Kasady, and if Peter and Yuri aren’t involved in stopping Cletus, then having a boss fight against Carnage while playing as Venom will feel unsatisfying and forced.
Although it might seem surprising, I don’t understand how a Venom game could realistically happen after the story of *Marvel’s Spider-Man 2*.
I’m open to being impressed by Insomniac’s plans for a follow-up to the Spider-Man game, even if it’s just a game where you play as Venom and can swing around New York City and, well, interact with the people on the streets. However, I would expect a strong story and answers to some key questions.
