Insomniacs X-Men Should Double Down on Rogue and Gambit’s Relationship

Insomniacs X-Men Should Double Down on Rogue and Gambit's Relationship

Highlights

  • Insomniac’s upcoming games include a Venom spin-off and an X-Men game, expected to follow Marvel’s Wolverine.
  • The X-Men game may depart from Insomniac’s usual focus, but the timing is ideal due to the characters’ resurgence in popularity.
  • Fans of the Gambit/Rogue romance in X-Men hope Insomniac can provide a satisfying resolution that other adaptations have lacked.

As a long-time fan of the X-Men and particularly of the tragic romance between Gambit and Rogue, I couldn’t be more excited about Insomniac’s upcoming X-Men game. Having followed their story since the 90s, their dynamic is one of the most compelling aspects of the X-Men for me, and it’s a shame that previous adaptations haven’t done justice to this complex and emotional relationship.

Following the unfortunate data leak incident that hit the company towards the end of last year, fans unexpectedly gained early access to Insomniac’s lineup of upcoming games. This premature peek revealed anticipated titles such as a new Spider-Man installment and the long-awaited Wolverine solo game. However, there were also some intriguing surprises in store. Notably, a Venom spin-off featuring Spider-Man was unveiled, and an as-yet-unnamed X-Men game was announced for a 2030 launch – presumably continuing the narrative from Marvel’s Wolverine.

As a longtime fan of Marvel and the X-Men, I’m both excited and apprehensive about Insomniac’s upcoming title. Having grown up watching the animated series and reading the comics, the X-Men hold a special place in my heart. With the recent leak of an alpha build for Marvel’s Wolverine, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment. But despite the setback, I remain hopeful about what Insomniac has in store for us.

Insomniac Needs to Incorporate the Rogue/Gambit Romance in its X-Men Game

Spoilers for X-Men 97 below

As an avid gamer and fan of X-Men 97, I can’t help but be moved by the heart-wrenching romance between Gambit and Rogue. Their story began when Gambit first appeared on the scene in 1990, and ever since then, they have remained Marvel’s most iconic troubled lovers. Although their relationship has been noticeably missing from most Fox live-action films, it has continued to be a vital element in X-Men stories for decades. From the original animated series to its current iteration, Gambit and Rogue’s tragic love story remains a captivating cornerstone of the X-Men universe.

The sad tale of Gambit and Rogue has often been tinged with tragedy because of her unique powers, making normal relationships impossible. However, X-Men 97 raised the stakes significantly during its debut season. In a heroic act, Gambit sacrifices himself on Genosha to shield his friends from Tri-Sentinel’s attack. The team is deeply affected by this loss, but Rogue is hit the hardest. Although fans can assume that Gambit might return at some point in the future, there’s no certainty as to when that may happen, leaving those invested in their relationship feeling frustrated and waiting.

Insomniac Could Do Gambit and Rogue Better than Other Adaptations

As a passionate gamer and avid Marvel fan, I can’t help but notice the significant impact of the Gambit and Rogue dynamic on the X-Men universe. This captivating relationship is as essential as epic storylines such as Dark Phoenix or Wolverine versus Sabertooth. It’s a narrative thread that has persisted throughout various adaptations, and its absence in previous Fox movies left many fans feeling let down.

As a dedicated gamer following the saga of Rogue and Gambit, I’ve come to notice one major challenge in their relationship development: the serialized nature of the comics and TV shows we love to consume. These storytelling platforms thrive on long-term narratives, which can lead to an excessive build-up of “will they, won’t they?” tension for character arcs like Rogue and Gambit’s romance. While this keeps us hooked in the storyline, it often leaves fans craving a satisfying resolution that seems elusive.

Insomniac Games has publicly expressed their intention to conclude the “Marvel’s Spider-Man” saga as a standalone story with a clear beginning and end. This announcement brings excitement to Insomniac’s upcoming X-Men project, allowing fans to potentially witness the long-awaited resolution of the tragic love story between Rogue and Gambit. With a definitive ending planned, Insomniac has the opportunity to grant these iconic characters a satisfying conclusion that fans have yearned for since 1990.
