Intel Extends Warranty for Crashing 13th and 14th Generation CPUs

Intel Extends Warranty for Crashing 13th and 14th Generation CPUs

Highlights

  • Intel extends warranty on Core 13th and 14th gen processors by 2 years due to crashes.
  • Issues stemmed from high voltage/frequency settings affecting performance on specific motherboards.
  • Intel plans to release microcode patch in 2024, encourages affected users to contact support.

As a seasoned gamer with years of overclocking experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel relieved and somewhat vindicated by Intel’s recent announcement to extend warranties for their 13th and 14th gen processors. After countless hours spent tweaking settings on my rig, only to have it crash unexpectedly, I found myself in the company of many other frustrated enthusiasts.

As an enthusiastic tech fan, I’m thrilled to share that Intel has expanded the warranty on their boxed 13th and 14th generation Core processors! Originally offering a three-year warranty, this extension now extends coverage to a fantastic five years. This decision follows reports of unexpected crashes with these CPUs, demonstrating Intel’s commitment to addressing customer concerns and ensuring satisfaction.

In April, Intel acknowledged and worked on stability problems in their 13th and 14th generation processors. These issues were related to excessive voltage and frequency settings leading to overheating and decreased performance. The instability was predominantly noticed on motherboards from the 600 and 700 series, particularly when BIOS settings for overclocking and underclocking were adjusted. Even after BIOS updates from the motherboard manufacturers, numerous users still experienced troubleshooting these problems. Upon further investigation, Intel discovered that a specific microcode algorithm was causing the CPUs to demand inaccurate voltage levels, leading to system crashes.

As a devoted fan, I’m excited to share that Intel has promised a microcode patch coming in mid-August 2024, addressing the issues with their 13th and 14th-gen CPUs. To alleviate our concerns, they’ve issued a statement to Tom’s Hardware, reassuring us of their unwavering support for affected users.

Intel Advises Who to Contact for Core 13th/14th Gen Issues

  • OEM/System Integrators: Contact the system manufacturer’s support team.
  • Boxed CPU: Contact Intel Customer Support.

1. In addition, Intel is developing methods to detect and isolate impacted processors within user systems more efficiently. They will share new guidelines as they become accessible. Intel has admitted to delays in communication and understands the challenges associated with identifying and addressing the issue. Interestingly, sales of Intel’s 13th and 14th-generation CPUs are said to be ongoing without any disruptions despite the ongoing uncertainty about their stability.

It appears this decision could be advantageous given that reports suggest the return rate for Intel’s 13th generation CPUs in Europe is as much as four times greater than their predecessors, and analysts predict the same trend with the 14th generation. On the other hand, AMD processors have consistently kept a low return rate of around 1% since 2020.
