2023 saw Evil Geniuses triumphing at the VALORANT Champions, securing the third global title for Riot’s tactical first-person shooter. In less than two years, only one familiar figure is left standing: coach Christine “potter” Chi.
Previously professional Counter-Strike player Potter, who initially joined EG as a player in 2021, renewed his coaching contract during this offseason, extending his tenure with the team up until 2027. Additionally, the team has also recruited Jacob “icy” Lange and once renowned world-class player Jaccob “yay” Whiteaker.
This year, the goal for potter is the same as it always is: do more with less.
At the VCT Americas Media Day, we were privileged to have a chat with Potter. This conversation has been slightly adjusted for better understanding and brevity.
YouTube: In the SEN City Classic, you mentioned your desire to collaborate with a particular lineup. However, I’m curious about the factors that resulted in the team being formed with “Icy” instead of Tyler “Sym” Porter.
As a dedicated fan, I’ve consistently approached team rosters with a mindset geared towards making them function effectively, come rain or shine. It wasn’t about contemplating replacements for players; instead, it was about fostering their growth and potential. So when I made that statement looking forward to 2025, I wholeheartedly believed that lineup would be our shining stars then.
Following that tournament, it became evident that sym posed certain challenges. I genuinely hoped we could overcome these hurdles; sym is immensely skilled, extremely ambitious, a fantastic team player, and a genuinely kind person. However, time management was a constant concern for me, as I aimed to ease yay into a conducive setting and emphasize his success. It was crucial to ensure that everyone was performing their roles effectively, especially given yay’s role shifts and his discomfort with the sentinel position.
With the lineup we’re starting off with at Kickoff, it appears that this particular mix of players has worked out more favorably for us.
FB: On Instagram, a question about consistency in the team roster: From 2022 to 2023 was the last time you maintained the same core group, and we all remember how the 2023 season unfolded. How significant is it to keep this core intact during the offseason?
The significance of the situation was undeniable, even amidst the criticism I faced from the community, my peers, and some within management regarding the proposed changes in the 2023 roster. However, I firmly believed that maintaining a strong core would be crucial. The groundwork, all the minor hassles that teams often encounter which consume considerable time, had already been laid [for 2023].
In 2025, our roster will be similar to what we’ve established. We spent the previous year ironing out many of the details, getting to know each other better, and laying a solid foundation. All those tasks are now complete. Unfortunately, we had to part ways with Alexander “jawgemo” Mor last year, which was a significant blow for us as a team. However, we invested a lot of effort into our development during that time, and we’re very optimistic about the results of that hard work.
As a passionate fan, I’m eagerly anticipating the unique contributions that YAY and Icy will bring to the table during VCT America. So far, we’ve witnessed some incredible gameplay, but these two have the potential to show us aspects of Valorant that we haven’t experienced yet. I can hardly wait!
Over the past three years, EG has become a destination rather than a choice for most players due to circumstances. Each player brings their unique hunger, determination, and personal narrative seeking redefinition. My knack lies in working with these underdogs, driven by an unyielding desire to validate themselves. I see similar potential in Yay and Icy.
To achieve his goal, he must demonstrate that he’s not just proficient with the Chamber character; instead, he’s transitioned to the Sentinel role and faces daily challenges. Our squad includes El Diablo, but we need him to perform his assigned tasks, even if they aren’t as glamorous as securing multiple headshots. At times, he’ll have to rely on his skills beyond his trip, and it’s details like these that our team is currently fine-tuning together. He’s an exceptional player, but his skill level can sometimes lead him into battles that may not be advantageous.
In a simpler phrase, let’s say: This player excels at team roles, showing high intelligence and humility while being selfless in combat. As a duelist, one must balance greed with a readiness to sacrifice for the team. Therefore, my emphasis is on showcasing his exceptional mechanical skills. Last year, that consistency was lacking, but I hope he regains it as part of this roster.
Facebook: Why did you choose to remain with EG, given your reputation and influence that could have landed you a coaching position elsewhere?
I received numerous offers, but they all proposed assembling a team of underdogs or players who need to demonstrate their skills from lower tiers. I was hoping to join a team willing to invest heavily in top-tier talent, however, that didn’t pan out. Some of the rumors are accurate. I did explore the possibility of joining NRG, and those discussions advanced quite far, but they opted for a different approach. At that juncture, I had two options: either move to a new team to carry on what I’m already doing here, or stay at EG and continue building upon the core I’ve established here.
I have the same level of confidence in Phat “supamen” Le as I had in jawgemo, but it seems that neither turned out to be our leading duelist for the year.
IG: He wasn’t even the best duelist on EG!
[Laughs] Absolutely! NaturE is indeed an exceptional IGL, and our partnership has evolved into a comfortable groove. As for Derreck, his skills are understated yet consistently impressive. He doesn’t seek the limelight in games or practice, but his performance is nothing short of fantastic.
I chose to remain because I have faith in our foundational principles, and I’m confident we made the appropriate decisions regarding our team composition. There’s uncertainty surrounding Yay, but he’s undeniably lifting us higher, much like how Ethan and Demon1 did in 2023. Consequently, I’m looking forward to seeing what this team can achieve.
