Interview: How Aspyr’s Bringing Jedi Power Battles To Modern Gaming

Aspyr Media, known for revamping timeless games like the Battlefront series and other Star Wars remasters, is set to release a fresh version of the classic game, Jedi Power Battles. Following a 25-year hiatus, this updated edition will enable contemporary gamers to revisit an iconic piece of Star Wars gaming heritage on their modern systems.

Last October, I was thrilled to hear the news about the remastering of “Star Wars: Episode I – Jedi Power Battles.” This project is being spearheaded by the talented team at Aspyr, who are renowned for their work in this field. The updated version will come with some exciting additions like additional characters and the option to switch Mace Windu’s saber colors, which I find quite intriguing. To delve deeper into this anticipated title, I recently had a chat with Chris Bashaar, the director of product at Aspyr, about their development process.

How Aspyr Is Bringing Back Jedi Power Battles After 25 Years

Additions To Jedi Power Battles

Inquiry: Does the development process for Aspyr’s Star Wars remasters vary between Jedi Power Battles and other projects, and if it does, what are those differences?

Our objective for Star Wars: Episode I – Jedi Power Battles was to maintain the thrilling, action-packed experience fans fondly recall, while enhancing accessibility and quality-of-life aspects. Unlike many of our other projects, we concentrated on refining the controls and gameplay, all while keeping true to the original Dreamcast version. At Aspyr, our fundamental principle is “additions not revisions,” so players can expect both modern and classic control options in our release. It’s a blast to be able to play both versions and develop two distinct strategies for gameplay.

A: To what extent can players personalize their gameplay? Is it mainly restricted to visual changes, or does it extend to modifying elements such as random number generation (RNG) and artificial intelligence (AI) of enemies?

Customization in the game mainly revolves around aesthetic and gameplay aspects, like changing lightsaber hues, adjusting user interface settings, and switching between contemporary and vintage controls. Although factors such as Random Number Generator (RNG) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) cannot be altered, these enhancements allow players to customize their gaming experience according to their tastes. The most significant customization comes from selecting among 13 new playable characters, some with unique attack styles. We aim to make the game feel refreshingly new and thrilling once more.

Question: Known for being quite challenging, is there any plan by Aspyr to incorporate accessibility adjustments in the Jedi Power Battles game?

Sure thing!

“Absolutely! We’ve implemented a fresh control system aimed at tackling these issues. Furthermore, the game has been fine-tuned for better equilibrium and enhanced mechanics, ensuring it remains challenging yet fair for all gamers while preserving the original’s beloved difficulty level.

Q: How are the new members of the Jedi Power Battles’ roster being chosen?

B: To maintain authenticity within the Star Wars universe while introducing freshness and versatility to gameplay, we carefully chose new characters, focusing on offering distinct playing styles and enhancing enjoyment for both veteran and novice players. The Tusken Raiders serve as an excellent illustration of this approach; one character uses a staff for combat (Staff Tusken Raider), while another shoots his foes with a rifle (Rifle Tusken). Now, there are numerous play options beyond just wielding a lightsaber.

Q: How much wholly new material will the game contain?

B: The new version of the game offers 13 fresh characters you can control, plus improved graphics and gameplay elements such as a lightsaber switch function. The mechanics have been polished, but it still preserves the essence of the original. These updates make the game more appealing for modern players.

Keeping Classic Material Alive

Question: In trailers, it’s shown that players can alternate between Mace Windu’s canonical purple lightsaber and his traditional blue one. How did Aspyr handle other non-canonical content within the game?

In our approach, we aimed to harmonize genuine authenticity with beloved nostalgia. To illustrate, we gave emphasis to classic aspects such as Mace Windu’s distinctive purple lightsaber, but simultaneously maintained features from the initial game to safeguard its special allure and enchantment.

A: Is there a chance that the remastered version of Jedi Power Battles will incorporate elements from the original PlayStation release, or will it solely base its improvements on the Dreamcast version?

This update follows the design of the Dreamcast edition, which offers the most polished take on the original game. Yet, we’ve added some cherished aspects from the PS1 version, such as maintaining distinct UI features that made it so iconic.

Q: What’s the most important element of the remaster to Aspyr?

As a dedicated fan of Jedi Power Battles, I aimed to pay tribute to its rich history while ensuring that both fresh gamers and those who returned found it captivating and fun. My goal was to keep the essence of the original game intact, but enhance the overall experience for everyone!

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to add about the remaster for fans of a Galaxy Far, Far Away?

A: We can’t wait for fans to re-experience the thrill of Jedi Power Battles! This updated version is a tribute to the original game and the Star Wars community. We hope both new and returning players will enjoy their journey through the galaxy as they embark on this timeless adventure.
