One of the new characters in the upcoming fighting game, Invincible VS, will have a backstory written by the creators of the original comic. Invincible VS, revealed in June 2025, is the first game developed by Quarter Up, the video game studio at Skybound Games. The 3-on-3 fighting game is scheduled to launch on April 30, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
Invincible VS is the first video game based on the popular Invincible universe. The Invincible comic book series, created by Robert Kirkman, ran for fifteen years, from 2003 to 2018, and has since expanded with numerous spin-offs. In 2021, Amazon launched an animated series that greatly increased the franchise’s popularity and made its main character well-known. The fourth season of the animated series is scheduled to premiere on Amazon Prime Video in March 2026, along with the return of the comic spin-off, Invincible Presents: Battle Beast. Battle Beast is co-created by Kirkman and Ryan Ottley, a longtime Invincible artist who became the main illustrator for the comic series. A live-action Invincible adaptation is also reportedly being developed.
Original Invincible VS Character Stars in Her Own Origin Story From the Original Comic’s Creators
Ella Mental, a new character appearing in the upcoming Invincible VS fighting game, will have her backstory revealed by the original creators of Invincible, Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker. According to IGN, the story will be told through the relaunched Capes comic series, which expands on the world of Invincible. Ella Mental’s origin will be featured in Capes issues 7–12, with the first issue arriving on May 27th. This project reunites Kirkman and Walker, the creative team behind the original Invincible comic and other projects, including Kirkman’s revival of the Marvel Team-Up anthology where Invincible made a guest appearance in Marvel comics.

Ella Mental is a new hero in the Invincible world who can control earth, wind, and fire. Introduced in the Invincible VS gameplay trailer, with voice work by rapper Tierra Whack, she demonstrates powers like creating fireballs, summoning tornadoes, and using boulders for protection. Her ultimate attack traps opponents in a water bubble, crushes them with rocks, and then engulfs them in flames. Though details about her story are still limited, Ella Mental’s diverse abilities make her a great fit for the Invincible universe.
I’m really hyped about the character list for Invincible VS! Robert Kirkman has said it’s going to be awesome, and they keep adding more and more cool characters – Cecil and Monster Girl are just the latest. The Invincible comics have so many heroes, villains, and supporting characters, all with crazy powers, so the game has a ton of potential. Plus, they’re throwing in original fighters like Ella Mental, which is super exciting and really expands the universe in ways I didn’t expect!
Some fans were surprised that the first Invincible game is a fighting game, but this format lets players relive the series’ most memorable fights. The game features a wide range of characters, each with unique powers, and lets you play as popular heroes like Atom Eve and Battle Beast, celebrating the entire cast, not just Invincible. Hopefully, if this game does well, it will lead to even more Invincible games down the road.
