Ashes of Creation, a large-scale online role-playing game, entered early access in December 2025 after nearly ten years of development and testing. Unfortunately, the studio that created the game has now closed, leading many to wonder: is Ashes of Creation actually shutting down? This guide will provide the answer.
The new game Ashes of Creation recently launched on Steam, but many are questioning its future. Is the concern justified?
What Happened to Ashes of Creation?
It was a huge shock for us fans when Ashes of Creation basically fell apart around February 1st, 2026. We started seeing reports online that Intrepid Studios, the team making the game, had laid everyone off – everyone – and that the whole leadership team had quit. It was a really tough day for the community.
Steven Sharif, the founder and creative director of Ashes of Creation, announced his resignation after a power struggle within the company. He stated that ‘the Board’ had taken control. However, it was later discovered that Sharif may have been the only member of that Board.
I’m absolutely gutted to hear that the entire team behind Ashes of Creation has been laid off. It’s even worse that they haven’t even been paid for their work! It’s so frustrating because the game sold a pretty good amount on Steam – around 250,000 to 300,000 copies – and each copy was almost $50. You’d think that would be enough to at least cover final paychecks, but apparently not. It’s a really tough situation for everyone involved.
It’s highly likely that Ashes of Creation will be shut down completely, though it was still available on Steam at the time of this report. The development studio, Intrepid Studios, has effectively closed and currently has no team working on the game.
How to Get Ashes of Creation Refund
If you’ve played Ashes of Creation on Steam for under two hours, you can request a refund through Steam’s support system. However, if you’ve played for longer than two hours, you won’t be eligible for an immediate refund.
Even though it might be difficult, you can still contact customer support, as this is a unique situation.
With the unexpected closure of Ashes of Creation, many people are anticipating lawsuits, particularly because of how quickly it happened. The game’s original Kickstarter promised full refunds to supporters if it wasn’t released on Steam, and while it was only available for a short time, that promise appears to have been kept.
