Is Chimecho a Scrapped Mythical Pokémon? Fans Think So!

Summary

  • Chimecho may have been a scrapped Gen 3 Pokemon re-added late in development.
  • Chimecho’s index number in the game data does not match its place in the Pokedex.
  • Some fans theorize Chimecho was originally intended to be a Mythical Pokemon.

Fans of Pokémon have proposed an intriguing theory regarding the third-generation creature, Chimecho. This theory suggests that Chimecho was initially discarded during development and later reintroduced at a late stage. The conjecture gains credence from the observation that Chimecho’s index number in the game data does not align with its position in the Hoenn Pokédex.

Originally debuting in the games Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, Chimecho is often referred to as the Wind Chime Pokemon. This unique creature resembles a traditional Japanese wind chime called a “fūrin” and is purely Psychic-type. Prior to its first appearance, it had a pre-evolution called Chingling, which was introduced in Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. In the Pokemon anime, a member of Team Rocket named James held onto his Wind Chime Pokemon so dearly that he refused to use it in battles during the Hoenn story arc. The most recent mainline game appearances for both Chingling and Chimecho can be found in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet: The Teal Mask.

It’s often thought that, despite being a commonly found Pokemon, Chimecho might have been intended for a different role during its creation. On Reddit’s r/pokemon forum, user StaySuspicious4370 sparked discussions about the theory that Chimecho was an abandoned Gen 3 Pokemon, later reintroduced during the development of Ruby and Sapphire. The basis for this theory includes the infamous 2024 Teraleak leak. Early versions of Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire contained Chimecho before it was removed from the Hoenn Pokedex, with its reasons for being cut remaining a mystery.

Pokemon Fans Debate Chimecho Development Theory

In a different approach, StaySuspicious4370 pointed out that the arrangement of index numbers and Pokedex sequence numbers provides data miners with a method to suggest if a Pokemon was developed later in the process. This is evident with Chimecho because its index number appears last among Hoenn Pokemon, not adjacent to Tropius or Absol as shown in Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire.

It seems there is confusion about why the team developing Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire decided to alter their plans for Chimecho. Subsequently, some users proposed theories suggesting that Chimecho might have originally been conceived as a Mythical Pokemon, given it was reintroduced towards the end of development. One Reddit user even suggested that Chimecho could have initially shared a connection with Jirachi, due to its wind chime form being reminiscent of the wish tags on Jirachi’s head.

Even though Chimecho isn’t categorized as a Mythical Pokémon, it’s still an uncommon Psychic-type that trainers might overlook while exploring the wild. It’s uncertain if Chimecho will appear among other creatures from Hoenn in Lumiose City when Pokemon Legends: Z-A releases towards the end of 2025.
