The esports industry has suffered from various challenges and tribulations over the last few years, and the path it has followed to become as big as it is has been a weary one. It’s not over yet, though. Sadly, many issues still plague the industry that leave people asking the question: ‘Is esports dying?’

What’s Wrong With Esports?

For over a decade, the esports sector has been grappling with numerous persistent issues, displaying unpredictable fluctuations similar to other markets. This volatility often results in organizations entering and exiting the industry at an unusually high rate.

Regrettably, it often boils down to financial matters. Over the past few years, there’s been a significant decrease in funding, investments, and cash reserves throughout the industry, yet wages for players and staff have generally stayed quite steep.

As more and more esports teams emerge daily, the market is growing increasingly congested. However, the format of prominent esports competitions remains largely unchanged, creating a scarcity in opportunities for these budding organizations to find suitable placement.

As an ardent enthusiast, I’d like to clarify: Esports isn’t on its deathbed, but it’s taking strides towards recovery following a massive surge that catapulted the scene to unprecedented heights in a brief span. We witnessed colossal investments running into hundreds of millions in the esports sector, and certain tournaments skyrocketed, amassing astounding prize pools that, unfortunately, couldn’t be sustained indefinitely.

It’s now a matter of adjusting on a global scale.

One perspective is that both traditional sports and esports couldn’t thrive without their audiences, and it’s this aspect that truly sets the esports sector apart. The popularity of many esports games continues to surge at an impressive rate.

Here are some key examples:

The Six Invitational 2024 set a peak viewership record at 521,374 users and kickstarted a popularity boom for the game.
The League of Legends World Championship 2023 set a peak viewership record at 6,402,760 users, setting a new world record for the esports industry.
The FNCS 2024 Global Championship became the most-watched Fortnite tournament in five years, securing a peak viewer count of 809,854.
The PGL Major Copenhagen 2024 proved to be a huge boost for Counter-Strike 2, landing a peak viewer count of 1,853,954 users.

The worldwide audience is expanding, leading to increased ticket and merchandise sales. This growth also provides a stronger foundation for investors and sponsors who are gradually re-entering the scene. It signifies higher ad revenue from enhanced streams, co-streaming possibilities, and an uptick in esports bettors placing wagers.

It’s challenging for fresh esports games to emerge, yet developers continue their efforts undeterred. In the past few months alone, titles such as The Finals, Spectre Divide, Tarkov Arena, Deadlock, Stormgate, and XDefiant have made their debut, each with the ambition of establishing themselves within the realm of esports.

Essentially, there’s a strong desire to elevate the esports sector into something truly remarkable, given its massive global fanbase of approximately half a billion people. Initiatives such as the Esports World Cup and Olympic Esports Games are striving to lend credibility to this industry, suggesting that we might be on the verge of a more stable and enduring phase within just a few years.
