Is Fortnite Getting 200-Player Lobbies?

As a long-time Fortnite gamer, I’ve seen and experienced it all – from the early days of 100-player lobbies to the thrilling chaos of duos and squads. But the prospect of 200-player lobbies leaves me both excited and apprehensive.

According to Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney’s latest interview, Fortnite may soon offer an unprecedented gaming experience with the introduction of 200-player lobbies. Previously unimagined in battle royale games, this upgrade could significantly escalate Fortnite’s popularity and excitement.

Would That Be Too Much?

During an interview with Matthew Ball, Tim Sweeney shared insights about Epic Games and Fortnite. Notably, he mentioned that Fortnite has the capability to accommodate up to 200 players in a single lobby.

Here’s what Sweeney said:

Why is Fortnite: Battle Royale 100 players? Well, because at the time we launched it we couldn’t make 200 players work on a server. Computers in the data center were just too slow.

At the initial release of Fortnite, it wasn’t capable of accommodating 200-player lobbies. However, this limitation has been surmounted now, allowing for such large groups. Sweeney further discussed the significant strides being made by the team in areas of networking, server administration, and player tracking.

Some players have raised concerns about the feasibility of a lobby accommodating 200 players, warning of potential chaos. Others suggest that this setup could only function effectively in a Zero Build mode since coordinating the construction activities of 200 unique players simultaneously would be an enormous strain on most servers.
