Summary
- Robert Downey Jr. is set to play villain Victor Von Doom in the upcoming Avengers films.
- It’s uncertain if Gwyneth Paltrow will reprise her MCU role due to her busy schedule outside acting.
- The relationship between Pepper and Tony Stark is still relevant in the MCU.
It remains undecided whether the Marvel Cinematic Universe co-star whose role might be significantly influenced by this striking similarity between Robert Downey Jr’s new character (Doctor Doom) and a previous one, will be present to witness these developments.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) made a significant milestone in the world of superhero adaptations by surviving long enough to construct and resolve a Crisis-scale crossover narrative on the big screen. The primary Avengers film series culminated in Infinity War and Endgame, bringing all fictional characters together and concluding the Infinity Saga, thus eliminating the threat of Thanos, at the considerable loss of Robert Downey Jr.’s renowned Iron Man character. Although Tony Stark’s heroic demise appears permanent, Downey has since been recast as a future antagonist within the franchise, portraying the villainous Victor Von Doom in the final stages of the ongoing Multiverse storyline. Ever since the casting announcement, fans eagerly anticipate the character’s MCU debut, officially titled Avengers: Doomsday, though whispers suggest that RDJ’s Doom may make an early appearance as well.
The Russos have been very secretive about their plans for the upcoming MCU mainline films since they returned to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, leaving fans guessing as to who might reappear in “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars”. One popular fan theory is that Gwyneth Paltrow’s character, Pepper Potts, could return due to her close relationship with Tony Stark. With the arrival of Doom, who strangely resembles her deceased husband, watching Pepper react would make for an intriguing storyline. Recently, during a Q&A session on her social media platforms, a fan inquired about Paltrow’s possible return to the MCU. In response, Paltrow hinted that she might be back but was uncertain, stating, “The truth is, I don’t totally know. I think I might, but I’m not sure. Nothing is confirmed. That’s the truth. That’s the inside scoop.
Gwyneth Paltrow’s Pepper Potts Could Easily Make An MCU Return

Though she’s achieved great success with numerous prominent roles, extending beyond the superhero realm, Paltrow has expressed a waning enthusiasm for maintaining her Hollywood career. Instead, she has been investing her time in various other endeavors, most notably her company, Goop. Consequently, Paltrow has avoided major roles in significant productions, particularly those requiring long-term commitments like the Disney Marvel series. However, she has shown openness to a potential return to the MCU under specific conditions, such as a minor role that can be filmed promptly. Given her character’s status within the franchise, there seems to be no obstacle to this arrangement. Yet, it remains uncertain if the franchise will find a suitable place for Pepper Potts, as the directors reportedly have an abundance of options for casting in the upcoming movies. The vast array of potential cast members has even led some to speculate that the delay in production for Avengers: Doomsday may be due to the need for selection and reduction in the pool of candidates. Ultimately, it hinges on whether or not the directors perceive value in welcoming Paltrow back.
I must admit, despite the limited exploration of characters and less screen time since the epic finale of Endgame, it’s undeniable that the romance between Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Pepper Potts remains my favorite in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The intrigue surrounding RDJ’s upcoming villainous role and potential involvement of Pepper as Rescue adds a thrilling layer to their storyline. As we move towards Avengers: Doomsday, it will be fascinating to witness how their dynamic unfolds in the coming films. Though Paltrow’s reluctance and the expansive cast make her inclusion seem improbable, history has shown us that unexpected events can occur – so who knows? We’ll just have to wait and see!
The MCU is available to stream on Disney+.
