Is Halo’s PS5 Launch Doomed to Fail Against Fierce Competition?

A significant discussion point in the gaming sphere lately revolves around Microsoft’s strategy for expanding its games across multiple platforms, popularly known as their multiplatform initiative. In the beginning of 2024, Microsoft made an announcement that they would be making four of their exclusive games playable on PlayStation 5 and/or Nintendo Switch. Among these were ‘Grounded’ and ‘Pentiment’, developed by Obsidian Entertainment, ‘Hi-Fi Rush’ from Tango Gameworks, and ‘Sea of Thieves’ from Rare. Initially, it seemed that Microsoft was merely dipping their toes into the waters with these multiplatform launches and hadn’t yet fully committed to dropping Xbox exclusivity. However, things took a sharp turn in the following months.

This year, Microsoft plans to bring popular Xbox exclusive games such as “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle”, “Doom: The Dark Ages”, and “Forza Horizon 5” to PlayStation 5. If reliable sources are correct, this might just be the start. Multiple leaks hint that “Halo: The Master Chief Collection” will arrive on PS5 in 2025, with a possibility that most future Xbox first-party games could debut simultaneously on PlayStation and Nintendo consoles. This means that the next major “Halo” game might be launched on PS5 at the same time as on Xbox, requiring Microsoft to strategically release it to avoid competition overshadowing the “Halo” PS5 port.

Halo’s PS5 Debut Needs to Be Timed Perfectly

The day when Halo transitions to PlayStation 5 will undeniably be a significant event. Known as the crown jewel of the Xbox lineup, it’s going to seem unusual to see this franchise appear on a non-Xbox console. Despite some contentious game releases over the years that may have dimmed its shine, Halo is expected to perform exceptionally well on PlayStation 5. However, there are numerous sci-fi games coming out for PlayStation in the immediate future, any of which might affect the sales of Halo.

Sony’s Upcoming Sci-Fi Games Could Impact Halo’s PS5 Sales

Recently, Naughty Dog, a studio owned by Sony, revealed their upcoming project – a third-person action-adventure game titled “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet“. Similar to “Halo”, this game is set in the far reaches of space, but it draws heavily on 80s pop culture. Notably, another sci-fi game, a roguelite action title called “Saros“, is also in development at PlayStation Studios by Housemarque, and it’s slated for release in 2026. Additionally, there are whispers that Santa Monica Studio, the minds behind “God of War”, might be creating their own unique sci-fi intellectual property as well.

It’s clear that these three Sony-exclusive first-party games for PlayStation aren’t being released soon, which means a potential port of Halo: The Master Chief Collection for the PS5 might not face direct competition from them initially. However, if the next significant Halo game is launched on PS5 simultaneously with its release date, it could potentially create difficulties for Microsoft. There are whispers that Halo Studios (previously known as 343 Industries) may be working on a remaster of Halo: Combat Evolved, which is being rumored for the PlayStation 5. If this speculated title launches around Intergalactic, Saros, or Santa Monica Studio’s next game, its sales could decrease, especially on the PS5.

A Halo: MCC PS5 Port Could Be Overshadowed By Other Third-Party Sci-Fi Games

Apart from original content from Sony, several exciting third-party games in the science fiction genre are set to launch on PlayStation 5 soon. Titles like “Borderlands 4”, “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach”, “Mindseye”, “FBC: Firebreak”, and “Ninja Gaiden 4” (published by Microsoft) are all planned for release in 2025. To ensure that Halo: The Master Chief Collection doesn’t get overshadowed, it would be wise for Microsoft to keep an eye on these upcoming sci-fi game launches.
