Even after years of anticipation, Highguard remained shrouded in secrecy until its release. While Wildgate Entertainment kept most details under wraps leading up to the launch of the first-person shooter, they did confirm one key aspect: the game would be free-to-play and its pricing structure.
After its surprising announcement at The Game Awards 2025, Highguard maintained a strong and mysterious presence leading up to its release. This only increased the game’s hype, and while players speculated about its story and gameplay, the developers were clear about one thing: the price.
How Much Does Highguard Cost? F2P Status, Explained

Highguard is a free-to-play shooter, so there’s no cost to play and it isn’t something you need to purchase.
We’ve overcome the first major hurdle. Similar games, like Concord, have demonstrated that asking players to pay for this kind of experience can lead to negative reactions, or even complete silence, as happened with Concord.
Everyone was stunned when Highguard was unveiled at The Game Awards 2025. Surprisingly, the lack of updates since then has actually made the game even more anticipated. And the best part? You won’t have to spend any money to try it out, no matter what you think of it.
Just a few days before its release, the game’s only promotion was its first trailer. The trailer concluded with a clear statement: “Play Free.”
Will Highguard Have Microtransactions & Battle Pass?

Steam has announced that Highguard will include optional in-game purchases, but that’s all we know so far about what extra items will cost or if the game will have ongoing live service features.
Besides the Steam announcement regarding the acquisitions, very little is known about Highguard, except for a short description of the person who created it.
The team behind Apex Legends and Titanfall presents Highguard, a new PvP raid shooter. Players become Wardens – powerful gunslingers who fight on horseback to control a legendary continent. Crews will battle each other for the Shieldbreaker, then attack enemy bases to claim territory in this fresh take on the shooter genre.
I’m super curious to see what Highguard is all about, just like everyone else! It’s going free-to-play on January 26th, and I’m definitely going to check it out to see what all the hype is about.
Would the fact that Highguard is free-to-play change your mind about playing it? Even with that, are you still planning to skip it?
