As an ardent follower of anime and light novels for over two decades now, I must admit that my heart skipped a beat when I learned about the progress of Danmachi’s Freya arc on Season V. Having been enamored with the series since its inception, I find myself on the precipice of an emotional rollercoaster as we inch closer to the final arc.

The anime titled “Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?”, commonly referred to as Danmachi, has been airing its fifth season since October. This latest season, known as Season V, follows the Freya arc, which spans volumes 16-18 of the original novel.

This season, consisting of 15 episodes (with 11 already broadcasted and the series receiving an English dub), is anticipated to run for just one “cour” (a cour is a three-month broadcasting period in Japan). Some enthusiastic viewers hope that a follow-up will be approved shortly; however, as the anime adaption is catching up with the novel, the production team may hold off on making any major announcements for a while.

In Japan, Volume 20 has recently been published, and it’s generating a lot of buzz. As per the author’s annotations, the storyline is about to enter its concluding stage. This implies that Volume 21, which follows, will undoubtedly kick off the final phase of the series. A final arc doesn’t always mean a single volume; it simply suggests that the series may be wrapping up soon, though there are instances where a final arc can go on for several years.

Danmachi Novel Serialization

Danmachi, written by Fujino Omori, has been serializing since 2013 and made some impressive milestones. Unlike many light novel series that are initially published in chapters in magazines before being collected into books (similar to most manga), Danmachi is exclusively distributed as volumes. This means that readers must wait for several months after completing the latest volumes to revisit the narrative again.

The success led to numerous adaptations across different media forms, such as manga, anime, spin-off series like Sword Oratoria being the most notable one, and video games.

The setting is a universe where deities from various mythologies are real entities, often found to be quite restless. To alleviate their boredom, several of them move to the city of Oratoria and coexist with humans, curtailing their divine abilities for amusement. In Oratoria, these gods and goddesses establish “Familias,” which function as guilds for venturing into dungeons together.

Moreover, we find our main character, Bell Cranel, who is the lone member of Hestia’s guild. His ambition lies in becoming an exceptionally powerful swordsman, yet he possesses a unique ability to inadvertently draw female admiration, even from the goddess that heads his guild.

The Future of Danmachi Anime Adaptation

Given how closely the anime aligns with the novel, and since the novel’s conclusion appears imminent, it’s plausible that they could opt for a “Demon Slayer”-style approach by pouring resources into filmmaking to deliver an epic climax to the series.

In the United States, both the Danmachi novels and manga are distributed by Yen Press. The anime version of this series is licensed for broadcast by Sentai Filmworks and HIDIVE.
