Summary
- Jinwoo easily justifies killing, suggesting a potential dark path in his future.
- However, the future story in the manhwa does not seem to steer towards Jinwoo turning evil
The following contains spoilers from the Solo Leveling manhwa.
In the series Solo Leveling, Jinwoo’s character experiences instances that could potentially lead to a shift in his allegiance or behavior, often referred to as a ‘heel turn’. Throughout the anime, we witness him struggling with an emerging thirst for combat and a darker desire to kill, which arise following his rapid acquisition of immense power.
Initially, Jinwoo exhibits a compassionate and approachable demeanor. However, as he shoulders increasing responsibility and feels the weight of saving everyone on his own, his emotions seem to grow more detached. Even Jinwoo acknowledges that he’s losing touch with his humanity as he becomes more powerful. Could it be that the Solo Leveling story is subtly hinting at Jinwoo’s transformation into a malevolent figure as he progresses towards god-like beings, shedding his humanity along the way?
Jinwoo Easily Justifies Killing
The Pieces Are There For His Fall

At first, Jinwoo appeared to strongly uphold a strict moral code against taking human lives. However, this principle gradually weakened following an incident during his initial dungeon raid alongside Yoo Jin-Ho, where he was compelled to defend himself by eliminating an entire group of hunters.
In Episode 6, the system warns Jinwoo, “There are individuals intent on harming you, the Player. Eliminate them all and maintain your security. CAUTION: Failure to accomplish this mission may result in your heart stopping.
At first, he was hesitant, but then found himself amazed at how effortless it turned out to be and how little impact it had on his moral compass. Although an action of self-preservation didn’t contradict the essence of his values, the sensation he experienced following the act left him pondering whether he had unwittingly forfeited a significant part of his humanity in exchange for the abilities bestowed upon him by the system.
In that instant, everything felt effortless. When the opportunity presented itself, I acted without delay. To be honest, I was annoyed that anyone could consider themselves in the same sphere as me. Certainly, the previous version of myself would have found a way to avoid such a situation.
Following the incident where he defended himself by slaughtering a hunter group, it’s evident that Jinwoo has grown an inflated sense of self-importance due to his powers, and he appears indifferent when taking human lives. These characteristics could set the stage for a sinister transformation in Jinwoo as he distances himself from humanity. This ominous shift is further emphasized when Jinwoo rescues his mother, but instead of feeling joy or relief, he’s unable to appreciate the moment due to his past actions.
For such a long time, I’ve yearned for this moment… but now that it’s finally here, I find myself feeling incredibly anxious. After the awakening, I fear I may have stepped over a boundary I can no longer return from.”

Turning Evil Is Unlikely
The Story Goes a Different Direction in the Manhwa

Despite the initial setup suggesting that my character, Jinwoo, might succumb to evil, the manhwa’s narrative appears to steer clear of this path. Instead, I continue to engage in combat against increasingly powerful entities, which leaves readers questioning my moral compass but ultimately leads us down a different, intriguing storyline.
“I feel like something within me is lost every time I get stronger.” -Sung Jinwoo
Eventually, Jinwoo decides to distance himself even more by single-handedly confronting the monarchs during their war and carrying the burden of it all. He employs the Cup of Reincarnation and instructs the rulers not to let any hunters awakened on Earth through the gates, making him the only such being. Rather than succumbing to darkness, Jinwoo chooses to safeguard humanity while keeping himself apart from them. This pattern persists in subsequent storylines as he frequently departs for extended periods to combat the Itarim, leaving his loved ones behind during his absence.
While it’s not mandatory for the Solo Leveling anime to mirror the manga storyline exactly, so far, it has been quite faithful in its adaptation. There have been minor alterations made along the way to enhance the viewing experience of the anime. This suggests that the anime might not delve into Jinwoo’s potential villainous arc as hinted earlier. However, it’s wise to remember these early foreshadowing scenes, as they portray aspects of Jinwoo’s character that could have manifested had the circumstances been different.
Solo Leveling can be streamed on Crunchyroll and Amazon.
