Is Light or Darkness Better in Fire Emblem Shadows?

The latest installment in the beloved *Fire Emblem* series, *Fire Emblem Shadows*, offers exciting battles that combine player-versus-player and cooperative gameplay. Players can choose to fight for the forces of Light or Shadow, leading some to question which side offers the best experience.

This guide will help you decide between the Light and Shadow paths in *Fire Emblem Shadows*. It provides a full look at each side, including how they play, what rewards you’ll get, the major differences in the story, and how your choices impact the overall narrative.

Should You Play for the Light or Shadow in Fire Emblem Shadows?

Fire Emblem Shadows introduces a unique gameplay feature: players control a squad of three, but one member secretly works for the opposing Shadow faction. You can choose to align with either the Shadow or the Light, each offering a distinct experience. Deciding which side to play as can be tricky, so here’s a breakdown of each faction and how they play.

  • Fight for the Light: Players who choose the Light side will enter combat during the Sun Room Phase, and try to defeat every foe, while figuring out who is the traitor among them. They need to pay attention to which player endangers the team the most to determine which one is the traitor, but those playing for the Shadows also have their own tricks to hide their misdoings, so be careful. At the end of the Sun Room, there’s a vote, and players need to choose carefully which of the three is the Traitor, to gain a revive token for the next phase, which will determine the side winning the Battle.
  • Fight for the Shadows: Players who choose the Shadow side will enter the Sun Room Phase and try to hurt or disturb the Light Side players as they move into the Moon Room Phase, and reveal their true shape. In the middle of the two phases, there will be a vote, and if they play their cards right, they will be able to trick other players into voting for the wrong one. By doing so, they will empower themselves and gain an advantage in the next combat phases, which is PvP. Destroying the Light Side players before this phase ends will mean a victory for the Shadow Side.

The two sides are evenly matched. While the Light Side has more players, the Dark Side can catch them off guard. Playing as the Dark Side is harder because Light Side players can team up to quickly defeat the single Dark Side player, who only has limited AI assistance. Ultimately, the battle could go either way, and there’s no clear winner between the Shadow and Light sides.

When it comes to how the story unfolds, the Light Side path is quicker to complete the main storyline. That’s why the game suggests playing the Light Side first, then experiencing the Shadow Side.

When it comes to character development, the Shadow Side generally offers better rewards for completing battle challenges. This creates a balance between the two sides, allowing players to choose the playstyle they prefer.
