As a seasoned observer of human dynamics and relationships, I find the bond between Ui Ui and Mei Mei in Jujutsu Kaisen intriguing yet troubling. Having worked with numerous individuals from all walks of life, it’s clear that some connections defy conventional wisdom and logic. This duo seems to fall into that category.

The following article contains spoilers from Jujutsu Kaisen’s Shibuya Incident story arc:

  • Manga:
    • chapter 102
  • Anime:
    • season 2, episode 38, “Fluctuations”

In the series called “Jujutsu Kaisen“, we find that Mei Mei and her younger brother Ui Ui share a strong bond. The Shibuya Incident offers many insights into their relationship. However, what stands out most is Ui Ui’s selfless act of being prepared to sacrifice himself for Mei Mei. Is this sibling connection typical or does it border on one of the unhealthiest relationships in “Jujutsu Kaisen“?

Delving deeper into this intriguing tale, I can’t help but notice the striking age disparity between Ui Ui and his older sister, Mei Mei. It’s almost unbelievable how youthful Ui Ui seems compared to his adult counterpart. Yet, it’s not just their ages that make this story puzzling; Mei Mei’s fixation on money is a concern that can’t be ignored.

There Is a Significant Age Gap Between Ui Ui and Mei Mei

It’s likely that fans of JJK might observe the significant age difference between Ui Ui and Mei Mei. Interestingly, Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen Official Character Guide doesn’t disclose their exact ages. However, we know that by the time of the Hidden Inventory/Premature Death arc in 2006, Mei Mei had already graduated from Tokyo Jujutsu High. This means she was at least in her thirties during the Shibuya Incident in 2018.

Observing the scene, it’s clear that Ui Ui isn’t enrolled in Tokyo Jujutsu High, instead making his debut alongside Mei Mei during the Shibuya Incident. Given this, one could reasonably assume he’s of middle school age, roughly 12 to 14 years old. This suggests a significant age difference of around 15 years between him and Mei Mei.

From my perspective, a difference of fifteen years can certainly foster unhealthy power dynamics, particularly in sibling relationships like that between me and my older sister. Young as I am, I find myself idolizing her, which explains why I couldn’t stomach any criticism or disagreement from Yuji when it came to her during our journey down to the Shibuya subway station.

Ui Ui and Mei Mei’s Confrontation With the Smallpox Deity Has a Disturbing Twist

The Younger Brother Pledges to Die for His Adult Sister

It’s completely normal for a younger sibling to admire their elder sibling. Historically, though, the elder sibling has the duty of being a role model for their younger counterpart. Additionally, it’s customary for the grown-up sibling (Mei Mei) to make every effort to shield and care for her younger one, who is still pre-adolescent.

During their struggle against the powerful curse spirit called Smallpox Deity, the bond between Ui Ui and Mei Mei takes a more ominous turn. When Mei Mei uncovers that the spirit is drawn to the strongest source of cursed energy, she poses a chilling query to Ui Ui:

Are you willing to die for me?

Jujutsu Kaisen , chapter 102

Observing such a situation, it’s deeply disturbing when an adult requests a child to sacrifice their life instead. But when that child is my brother, the gravity of such a request becomes even more appalling. To my astonishment, Ui Ui responds with a chilling acceptance, “I’d be delighted if you’d let me, sister.

For numerous JJK fans, this interaction might have been the moment when something felt amiss. Right from the start of the series, Akutami made it clear that Mei Mei has a transactional approach to relationships. However, using her brother as a pawn in such a way crosses into the territory of narcissistic abuse, which any reasonable person would find intolerable.

How did Ui Ui agree to die so young? Could it be that he was influenced or manipulated in some way? Why isn’t Child Welfare Services involved here?

Ui Ui’s Cursed Technique Stems From His Devotion to Mei Mei

The Siblings’ Binding Vow Is Symbiotic

In this retelling, Ui Ui’s selfless act tipped the scales in favor of the siblings against the Smallpox Deity. The younger brother neutralized the dark powers of the cursed spirit using a Basic Domain, giving the older sister an opportunity to attack it with her cursed raven’s Suicidal Strike from the Skies. Consequently, they successfully banished the powerful evil spirit.

Looking at it from a broader viewpoint, Ui Ui’s selfless act ultimately led to a favorable result. This is because Ui Ui successfully drove out a very harmful cursed spirit and, fortunately, both Ui Ui and Mei Mei survived the ordeal unscathed.

Was it assumed by Mei Mei that she would profit from her brother’s risky wager? Was the situation merely an attempt at deception? In what way could such a choice be rationalized?

In Jujutsu, magic is largely guided by clear reasoning because many tasks lead to some form of sacrifice, whether a regular person or sorcerer. Maybe Mei Mei thought that if her brother perished, she as a more proficient sorceress could continue fighting against the Smallpox Deity. And if Mei Mei succumbed, Ui Ui’s fate would be sealed, and the high-grade curse would run rampant.

Although these points about Ui Ui’s decision are all relevant, the reason behind his selfless act is actually quite straightforward. Ui Ui has a sacred pledge with Mei Mei that stipulates he can only unleash his cursed energy when she gives her approval. In return for this agreement, Ui Ui gains access to an immense amount of cursed energy – enough power to neutralize the assault of an elite-level cursed spirit!

A jujutsu sorcerer’s vows are promises they make to themselves or others, which come with certain conditions. Adhering to these terms grants them increased power or helps them accomplish difficult objectives. Violating this agreement brings about unfavorable outcomes.

In simple terms, Ui Ui’s pact with Mei Mei equalizes their bond. By risking his life, he acquires powerful combat skills in various realms – something Mei Mei doesn’t have. Essentially, they both depend on each other just as much.

In essence, the dynamics within the jujutsu world can be puzzling to ordinary people. Some might view the relationship between Ui Ui and Mei Mei as toxic. However, there could be emotional complexities that only adult Ui Ui can address through therapy, or perhaps not. Whatever their case may be, it’s clear that their bond works for them. While we might not fully comprehend it, it’s important to respect their relationship.
