Summary
- Meta is reportedly working on a new high-end Quest headset prototype as a potential follow-up to the discontinued Quest Pro.
- Despite speculations, a new headset release isn’t expected soon to avoid overshadowing the current Meta Quest 3 models.
According to recent reports by a tech journalist, it appears Meta is developing a cutting-edge prototype for a new Meta Quest headset model. This potential newcomer might serve as an upgrade to the Meta Quest Pro – a mixed reality headset.
The Meta Quest Pro faced challenges in the market, offering top-notch virtual and mixed reality experiences, but at a premium cost. The device failed to captivate many users, leading to its discontinuation. Yet, it appears that Meta might be considering a successor.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve been keeping my fingers crossed after hearing from Mark Gurman at Bloomberg. He mentioned in his recent report that there could be a successor to the Meta Quest Pro in the pipeline. What’s intriguing is that he hinted at not just the Meta Quest 4, as anticipated, but also a brand-new premium model, which might potentially replace the Quest Pro. Unfortunately, specific details about this high-end headset are yet to be disclosed, leaving us gamers to ponder over its potential features. It’s important to note that this project could remain in development and may never see the light of day due to Meta’s prototype-focused approach.
Meta Previously Canceled a Presumed Quest Pro 2 Prototype
Previously, rumors circulated about Meta abandoning the Quest Pro 2 headset project, causing speculation regarding a potential replacement. However, there’s uncertainty whether the upcoming headset mentioned by Gurman is identical to the earlier La Jolla project. Even if it isn’t, it’s worth noting that Meta often has numerous prototypes in development at any given moment, not all of which make it to market. So, while one high-end release or Quest Pro 2 may have been shelved, it’s possible other similar projects have been progressing through the development pipeline.
Currently, there’s no immediate need for VR and mixed reality aficionados to anticipate a new headset launch, as the recently released Meta Quest 3S is relatively fresh, and the company might prefer to maintain focus on the Meta Quest 3, their premium model, rather than diverting attention and customers away from it. Even a potential Meta Quest 4 isn’t expected until 2026. Fortunately, Meta typically provides updates that enhance the performance of its hardware, so users can look forward to some minor upgrades in the Meta Quest 3’s capabilities over the next two years or so.
