As the release date for Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater draws nearer, there’s been much speculation about whether it’s a remake or something new altogether.
Set to debut on August 28 across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and potentially Nintendo Switch 2 later this year, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater promises a revival for the beloved Konami franchise following its extended hiatus. The trophy list hints at formidable tasks ahead.
Given the anticipation amongst fans for a fresh instalment of Metal Gear Solid, there might be some perplexity regarding its remake standing. However, let’s clarify any uncertainties right away.
Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater Remake Status, Explained
In a heart-pounding throwback, I found myself immersed in the completely reimagined world of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater – a breathtaking remake of the iconic 2004 game, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.
In the popular Metal Gear Solid franchise, Snake Eater stands out as a fan favorite because although it was the fifth installment, it actually takes place first chronologically within the series timeline. This makes it the inaugural remake of the series, and it was selected primarily due to its historical setting during the Cold War era in 1964.
The new version of the game is expected to closely follow the plot from its initial release, approximately 20 years back. Notably, Hideo Kojima and Yoji Shinkawa, the original creators, are not part of the team that developed this latest edition.
In simpler terms, it was announced in May 2023 that Konami was planning a remake of the game Snake Eater, marking a change in their strategy as they had previously decided to focus less on developing and publishing major games from other companies. Since the release of Metal Gear Survive, a spin-off title, in 2018, this will be the first main series game to come out.
Will There Be Any More Metal Gear Solid Remakes?
There’s been no announcement yet about more Metal Gear Solid remakes, but if Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater does well, there could very well be opportunities for such projects in the future.
Remaking Snake Eater gives Konami a chance to narrate the series’ story sequentially for the first time, implying that potential remakes of Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2 might follow suit.
In a conversation with Famitsu in 2024, series producer Noriaki Okamura stated that remaking the first Metal Gear Solid would prove to be significantly challenging compared to Snake Eater. He also mentioned that similar challenges would arise for the second game. This is because both titles were initially launched on the MSX2 and Nintendo Entertainment System, implying that a considerable amount of work would need to be done from scratch for their remade versions.
The Master Collection for the series is already available, and it’s been confirmed that Volume 2 is on its way. However, these collections do not represent remakes of the games; instead, they compile multiple games from the series into one package.
If you’re interested in delving deeper into Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (Snake Eater’s successor), take a look at the reasons why Hideo Kojima himself is skipping the remake, and discover that the Foxhound Multiplayer mode won’t incorporate crossplay functionality.
