As a gamer, I’m always blown away by Hideo Kojima’s creativity when it comes to game development. Once again, he’s raised the bar with a 10-minute sneak peek at the upcoming sequel to 2019’s Death Stranding – Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. This trailer offers a deep dive into the story of Death Stranding 2, and while it promises an emotional rollercoaster, the characters, old and new, are undeniably the stars of the show.
It’s delightful to witness the return of beloved figures such as Sam and Fragile once more in Death Stranding 2. However, among the new characters introduced in the pre-order trailer, there’s Neil – a cryptic figure who seems to carry a painful history driving him towards a vengeful destiny. Although specific details about his character development are scarce, the trailer leaves no doubt: Neil is the character to keep an eye on in Death Stranding 2.
Why Fans Should Keep a Close Eye on Neil in Death Stranding 2
Neil’s Resemblance to Solid Snake Opens the Door to Death Stranding 2 Meta Conversation
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but notice the striking resemblance between the character in the Death Stranding 2 pre-order trailer and Solid Snake from Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid series. Given Kojima’s penchant for weaving threads from his past masterpieces into his new creations, this isn’t entirely surprising. In fact, Metal Gear Solid itself is a brilliant demonstration of this technique, with numerous nods to Kojima’s earlier works like Snatcher and Policenauts. Even the original Death Stranding featured a subtle reference to Metal Gear Solid, as Sam’s line, “Kept you waiting, huh?,” echoes one of Snake’s famous phrases.
Despite little concrete information being revealed about his character development, it’s evident from the trailer that Neil is the standout character to focus on in “Death Stranding 2”.
Given that circumstance, it might simply be a clever wink towards one of Kojima’s renowned series that Neil resembles Solid Snake so much. While Kojima himself has never explicitly confirmed it, the concept of a “Kojima-verse” has been discussed for quite a while now. Even if such a universe doesn’t truly exist, Neil’s likeness to Solid Snake still creates an overlap between the developer’s franchises, providing a meta-commentary that significantly enhances the gaming experience. This might not be the primary reason fans should watch Neil in Death Stranding 2, but it’s certainly enough for followers of Kojima’s work to instantly recognize a connection with the sequel.
Neil May Be an Antagonist in Death Stranding 2, But Might Be Too Obvious
In the upcoming game, Death Stranding 2, Neil stands out as a character to keep an eye on due to his enigmatic part in the storyline’s unfolding. From what we’ve seen in the pre-order trailer for the game, Neil appears to fit the mold of an adversary within the narrative. However, given Kojima’s track record for flipping expectations, it might not be as straightforward as that. For instance, Cliff Unger from Death Stranding was initially portrayed as a villain, but he eventually turned out to be a complex anti-hero instead.
In the freshly released teaser of “Death Stranding 2,” there seems to be a hint that Neil’s character development may mirror Cliff’s, although this could potentially stir controversy due to the perceived repetitiveness of such a move.
Despite not being the main villain in the story, it’s evident that Neil will play a crucial part, much like Cliff did in Death Stranding. It’s plausible (even probable) that Kojima is using Neil’s prominence in the trailer as a decoy to hide the true antagonist’s identity. Regardless of his role, Neil is definitely someone fans should keep an eye on as we get closer to Death Stranding 2’s release date in June.
