Summary
- PlatinumGames may be working on another live service game after Ninja Gaiden 4.
- A new job posting seeks a game designer who has ‘online action game’ and ‘open field game’ experience.
It’s possible that the next game from PlatinumGames might follow the model of a live service game similar to “Babylon’s Fall”. Renowned for their action games in the 2010s, studios like PlatinumGames are celebrated for hits such as “Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance”, the “Bayonetta” series, and “Nier: Automata”. Despite operating independently, they’ve also worked closely with major Japanese publishers like Square Enix, Sega, and Nintendo.
Approximately three years following the last significant update for “Bayonetta 3,” an exclusive title for Nintendo Switch, PlatinumGames unexpectedly attended Xbox’s Developer Direct event earlier this year. During the presentation, Xbox announced that PlatinumGames would be working together with Team Ninja, a renowned action studio cherished by many, on “Ninja Gaiden 4.” The highly anticipated new mainline entry in the popular ninja-action series is expected to release later this year, and fans of the franchise are eagerly anticipating the involvement of PlatinumGames.
It appears that a recent job listing on HRMOS offers some insight into what PlatinumGames might be working on beyond Ninja Gaiden 4. The studio is seeking a game designer with expertise in online action games and open-field games, suggesting that their future projects could potentially involve multiplayer elements and larger, more explorable environments. Since Ninja Gaiden 4, a single-player, linear game, is slated for release this year, it’s clear that this job posting pertains to PlatinumGames’ plans beyond that title.
PlatinumGames Looking for a Game Designer with “Online Action Game” Experience
At present, Platinum Games is engaged in two projects: Ninja Gaiden 4 and one other project known as Project GG. Information about Project GG is scant, but it appears to be associated with former PlatinumGames leader Hideki Kamiya’s interest in superheroes, specifically his creations Viewtiful Joe and The Wonderful 101. It remains unclear if Project GG is still in development at Platinum Games following Kamiya’s departure in 2023, given its recent absence from the studio’s website. However, considering the nature of the games it seems to be inspired by, a live service open-world game might not be its primary focus.
T Automata. Fans of the series have eagerly awaited new content, especially this year as Nier celebrates its 15th anniversary. This job listing suggests that both Platinum and Square Enix might be considering a daring move to create an online open-world Nier game. However, given the lukewarm reception to the live service title Babylon’s Fall in 2022 and the likelihood that most Nier fans would not appreciate a live service Nier installment, it seems unlikely that this will be the direction they choose.
As for what PlatinumGames has up their sleeve, Ninja Gaiden 4 is approaching in late 2025 and is expected to complete Team Ninja’s “Year of the Ninja.” This journey commenced with the stealth release of the Ninja Gaiden 2 Black remaster following the Xbox Developer Direct, and will carry on with Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound, a 2D action platformer from the creators of Blasphemous, due to arrive this summer.
