Summary
- An ESRB rating suggests Resident Evil 6 could be making a comeback.
- The rating points to RE6 coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X.
- The game is already technically playable on the consoles through backward compatibility.
It appears that Resident Evil 6, the main series Resident Evil game that received the lowest ratings, is set to return on contemporary gaming platforms. Launched in 2012, Resident Evil 6 was met with disapproval from fans and critics alike. While some appreciate certain aspects of the game, such as Leon’s campaign, many others find fault with it for being overly expansive and deviating too much from what made the survival-horror genre appealing initially.
Despite receiving unfavorable criticisms, Resident Evil 6 proved to be commercially successful, eventually being ported to various modern platforms such as the PS4, Xbox One, and more recently, the Nintendo Switch. Currently playable on the PS5 and Xbox Series X due to their backward compatibility, there are rumors suggesting that it might receive a native release on these newer consoles as well.
A rating by the ESRB hints that Resident Evil 6 might be released for Xbox Series X/S consoles. Unless Capcom has unexpectedly made Resident Evil 6 an exclusive for Xbox consoles on the newest systems, it’s reasonable to assume a PS5 version is also in development. It’s expected that the native Xbox Series X/PS5 versions of Resident Evil 6 will be similar to other editions, but there could be performance improvements. Given that Resident Evil 6 is playable on the PS5 and Xbox Series X via backward compatibility, some might question the need for a port, so perhaps Capcom has plans to add additional features to make it more appealing.
Resident Evil 6 Has a New ESRB Rating
It seems unlikely that a remastered version of “Resident Evil 6” for PS5 and Xbox Series X would spark much enthusiasm among fans. However, the recent ESRB rating for this game is intriguing, as it arrives just days before the Xbox Developer Direct on January 23. This event is expected to feature a new installment in an IP with a rich Japanese history. Although there’s no indication that the upcoming game at the Xbox Developer Direct is “Resident Evil” or even from Capcom, it’s possible. It’s plausible that an announcement about a new “Resident Evil 6” for PS5/Xbox Series X could coincide with the unveiling of the next game in the series, but fans should keep their expectations modest. A more probable scenario is that the mystery game has connections to Square Enix, as there have been hints about a port of “Final Fantasy 16” for Xbox at the show.
It’s been hinted by trustworthy sources that two remakes for the “Resident Evil” series might be underway: one for “Code Veronica” and another for “Zero”. Additionally, it’s speculated that “Resident Evil 9” is close to wrapping up development, with a potential release date set between 2025 and 2026. However, Capcom hasn’t confirmed any of these “Resident Evil” projects yet, so fans should be mindful of this information.
