The comic series Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord delves into the origins of the popular Sith Lord, Sam Witwer’s Maul. The story follows Maul as he attempts to rebuild his criminal organization on the planet Janix. He faces challenges from the authorities, competing criminals, and the growing power of the Empire, all while trying to convince a young Jedi Padawan named Devon Izawa (voiced by Gideon Adlon) to join him.

The Mandalorians, the iconic armored warriors popularized by the Disney+ series The Mandalorian, are one of the key groups fighting for control in Maul – Shadow Lord. Recent events in the animated series suggest a significant connection is being built between how the Mandalorians are portrayed in animation and in live-action.

Depictions of Mandalorians Have Drastically Changed

Before Disney bought Lucasfilm and the rights to Star Wars, George Lucas started changing how Mandalorian culture was portrayed in the Star Wars universe with the Clone Wars series. He envisioned Mandalore as a planet divided between those who wanted peace and those who clung to their warrior traditions. This was a significant shift from earlier depictions, which focused mostly on Mandalorians as hired guns. This new direction caused some disagreements between Lucas and Dave Filoni, as well as writers who had previously written about Mandalorians.

I have to admit, when The Mandalorian brought Mandalorian culture back into the spotlight, it did something really interesting. We weren’t just getting a rehash of what we’d seen before. The show introduced this group, the Children of the Watch, who felt much more connected to the Mandalorians of the old Legends stories. Din Djarin, played by Pedro Pascal, and his fellow warriors were bounty hunters, yes, but they were also deeply committed to preserving the ancient Mandalorian traditions. That commitment was visible in everything they did, most notably their unwavering rule about never showing their faces. They weren’t settling down anywhere either; this group was constantly on the move, travelling the galaxy and setting up temporary camps wherever they went.

Throughout The Mandalorian, it became clear that the group followed a strict, almost fanatical, interpretation of their culture, which was looked down upon by many other Mandalorians, especially Bo-Katan Kryze. Although their beliefs initially conflicted, they eventually united to reclaim their homeworld from the Empire, ushering in a new period for their people. Despite showing the differences between these groups, the series didn’t explain how the Children of the Watch originated.

I’m really invested in this series, and while it’s largely about Maul trying to build his crew, Rook Kast is a standout character to me. She’s one of the last Death Watch members still loyal to Maul after what happened in The Clone Wars season 7, and she’s completely dedicated to him as his right-hand person. She’s in charge of all of Maul’s troops, and you often see her fighting alongside other Mandalorians in those cool black suits of armor.

In the episode “Chapter 5: Inquisition”, it’s revealed that the black-armored Mandalorians don’t support Rook and Maul out of any sense of duty, but simply for money. When considering their options as the Empire tightens its grip on Janix, Kebris (voiced by Ben Diskin) admits their allegiance lasts only as long as they’re being paid. Eventually, in “Chapter 7: Call to Oblivion”, Kebris and a few other Mandalorians betray Maul, trying to strand him on Janix until the Empire destroys their ship.

Maul gained power on Mandalore by respecting and following traditional Mandalorian ways, even winning the Darksaber – a symbol of leadership – through combat. This attracted followers and initially led to a civil war with Bo Katan’s group. However, after losing his position and the Darksaber, people are now questioning if his approach was truly the right path for Mandalore.

The Mandalorian May Have Tied up Its Mandalore Storylines

As of now, it appears The Mandalorian has wrapped up its main storyline with Season 3, along with the stories set during the New Republic era. The Mandalorian and Grogu’s adventures focused on fighting the remains of the Empire and various criminals, and Ahsoka will continue building towards a conflict with Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen). This could allow Lucasfilm to explore Mandalorian culture more fully, now that they don’t need to worry about contradicting the direction of the live-action series.

In the Maul – Shadow Lord comic, Maul aims to take over the Crimson Dawn crime syndicate and build a powerful criminal empire. But pursuing this goal might force him to abandon the principles that his remaining Mandalorian followers respect, potentially causing them to leave him. They might even decide it’s better to work for themselves. This could be the origin of the Children of the Watch group seen in The Mandalorian, finally explaining how they came into existence.

Although the main story of the comic series focuses on Darth Maul, Maul: Shadow Lord is connecting to the live-action Star Wars shows by featuring the character Marrok prominently, years before he appears in Ahsoka. The comic will probably reveal how Marrok died and became connected to Nightsister magic. Given the importance of Mandalorians to the Star Wars universe – and Maul’s significant impact on their history – this comic seems like the ideal place to delve into a crucial moment in Mandalorian lore.
