Okay, The Game Awards just dropped a huge bomb on us! BioWare’s Casey Hudson – the guy behind KOTOR and Mass Effect – is heading up a new Star Wars game! It’s called Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, and it’s taking us back to the era of the original KOTOR games, which is awesome. Honestly, even after seeing the trailer, I’m still hyped! But there was this tiny little tease in the trailer – seriously, you could miss it if you blinked – that’s got everyone thinking this game is going to be absolutely incredible.
To be honest, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic faces significant hurdles. The development studio, founded in July 2025, means the trailer showcased a vision for the game, not a finished product. Achieving that vision is a huge task in itself, and it’s complicated by the fact that Hudson, who previously worked on The Old Republic, is leading the project again.
Adding to everything else, the story also builds on the established legacy of Revan. While this could have been avoided, it seems Arcanaut Studios, a new team led by Hudson, intentionally included it. If the developers deliver on their promises, though, this could usher in a fresh start for Star Wars games.
FOTOR Knows It’s in Revan’s Shadow, and It’s Embracing the “Dark” Side
The upcoming game, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, is described as a story-focused action RPG where players become a Force user exploring a galaxy undergoing a period of change. Like the original KOTOR, the game will feature choices that affect your character’s alignment with the light or dark side of the Force, influencing their abilities. Developers promise a compelling story, interesting characters, and exciting battles.
Every Feature Confirmed for FOTOR So Far
- Play a Force User
- Narrative-driven action RPG
- End of the Old Republic
- Choices
- “Memorable Characters” (implying new companions for Star Wars)
- Star Wars combat
The game is being presented as a spiritual successor to Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR), and hints at connections to the original game, but it won’t directly continue the story with the same characters. However, fans think they’ve seen The Leviathan—a ship from Revan’s fleet and a precursor to the Star Destroyer—in the game’s trailer. This suggests the new characters are actively investigating Revan’s history, which many fans consider a sequel in all but name, even if it’s not a direct continuation.
The link between this ship and established lore feels natural within the larger Star Wars universe, and the creators at Arcanaut Studios likely anticipated fans would notice it. It’s a fascinating idea for the FOTOR story, though it might be a deliberate misdirection. While the KOTOR game showed many ships built on the Starforge, making this one not the Leviathan statistically likely, the emotional connection is strong, and the studio probably counted on that reaction from fans.
Revan’s Shadow Now Lingers Over Two Games
Just the announcement of a new Star Wars game set during the Old Republic era is exciting. The return of Hudson is also great news. But the possibility that it will directly connect to the story of Revan, the protagonist from KOTOR, is incredibly thrilling. Considering the game is likely years away, this could tie in nicely with the KOTOR remake – if that project ever resumes development.
It’s still uncertain how the development of the KOTOR Remake and FOTOR will go, but fans are hoping both games live up to the hype. FOTOR directly addresses comparisons to KOTOR with its Leviathan feature, which shows the studio is confident, especially considering the difficulties it’s currently facing. Rise above and become a Jedi!
