Is the Arkhamverse Doomed After Suicide Squad’s Disappointment?

At one point, the Batman: Arkham series was a major force in the superhero video game genre. Rocksteady Studios led players on an amazing adventure as they followed Batman through an original trilogy within the DC Universe. Similarly, WB Games Montreal, Armature, and now Camouflaj have demonstrated that the franchise can shine just as brightly when it’s developed by different studios. However, with the arrival of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, it appears that the success of Batman: Arkham has suddenly halted abruptly.

As a gamer, I can’t hide the fact that Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League didn’t quite live up to expectations, given that they’ve wrapped up all post-launch content. Despite this setback, I have faith that the Batman: Arkham series isn’t ready to hang up its cape just yet. However, the future of the franchise is facing a bit of a challenge right now. Not only does the next installment need to regain the trust of fans disappointed by recent events, but it also needs to breathe new life into Batman’s narrative somehow.

The Arkhamverse‘s Future is a Bit Unclear

Suicide Squad Has Put a Shadow Over the Arkhamverse

For over a decade since the last major release in the Batman: Arkham series, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League aimed to restore the franchise’s prominence. By capitalizing on the success of Rocksteady’s trilogy, this game was set to significantly enlarge the Arkhamverse. This wasn’t just a shift in focus to the Suicide Squad; it also took on the challenging mission of introducing the Justice League, various dimensions, and even Brainiac.

The game was found unappealing by players because of its ongoing live features and repetitiveness. Despite offering an engaging narrative within the Arkhamverse, other aspects seemed to falter after launch.

Rocksteady Will Need to Do a Lot to Course-Correct

As a gamer, I’m yet to hear any news about another game set in the Arkhamverse after Suicide Squad. However, if there is another title coming up, it’s going to need to be impressive to make a mark. If Rocksteady doesn’t nail their debut, the next chapter might face the same challenges.

The upcoming Arkhamverse game should weave an outstanding narrative, offer players a vast world to traverse, and live up to the esteemed Batman: Arkham title. It’s crucial that it strays away from being another live-service game, instead emphasizing on Batman, as he is the heart of the franchise that captivated fans initially. Fortunately, the finale of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League hinted that the slain Bruce Wayne was a clone, opening up possibilities for another thrilling Batman-centric journey.

The latest game within the Arkhamverse, titled “Batman: Arkham Shadow“, is exclusive to the Meta Quest 3. This prequel could potentially spawn a VR sequel in the future, and such an option seems promising given that it has effectively returned the franchise to its origins, although through an innovative perspective. Regardless, Batman games are destined to endure.
