Summary
- The NCSoft-developed Horizon MMO might still be in development, even though recent rumors alleged that it was canceled.
- The journalist who reported the NCSoft cancelations recently affirmed that the now-shelved Project H, which many assumed to be the Horizon MMO, is completely unrelated to Horizon.
- In addition to the Horizon MMO, there’s a Horizon co-op multiplayer game in PlayStation’s live-service pipeline.
It appears that the previous reports about the cancellation of the Horizon MMO might not be accurate. Although PlayStation has axed several live-service projects in recent times, there’s now a hint suggesting that the rumored Horizon MMO being developed by NCSoft may still be ongoing, at least temporarily.
It’s been whispered that one of the projects connected to the Horizon IP could be a multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), which is believed to be a joint venture between PlayStation and NCSoft, known for creating MMORPGs like Guild Wars 2, Blade and Soul, and Genesis. This potential MMO has been in development since the end of 2022, although neither company has officially acknowledged it. Interestingly, some of NCSoft’s job postings have referenced work on a game called Project Skyline, and the logo for this project features the same font as the Horizon logo, suggesting that Project Skyline is indeed linked to the Horizon franchise.
The future of the Horizon MMO has been uncertain following claims that NCSoft’s financial difficulties led to cancellations of multiple upcoming games, including one known as Project H. Initially, people assumed that Project H was the Horizon MMO and thought it had ceased development. However, in a recent email clarification, Seo Jeong-geun – the journalist who reported on NCSoft’s canceled projects – stated that Project H had no connection to Horizon. As a result, there is speculation that the Horizon MMO may still be under development.
Horizon MMO Apparently Not Canceled, Previously-Rumored Project H Was a Separate Game
Given that Sony recently scrapped two live-service projects from Bend Studio and Bluepoint Games, it’s not surprising that some people believe the development of the Horizon MMO may have been halted. In the early stages of the PS5 era, Sony aimed to launch 10 live-service games by 2026, but many, like Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Online project, did not proceed as planned. Furthermore, the poor performance of Concord last year seems to have prompted Sony to reconsider the remaining live-service games they have in development.
As a devoted Horizon fan, I’ve been thrilled to see that the MMO for PlayStation has managed to avoid cancellation (so far). Yet, what intrigues me even more is that it’s not the sole Horizon live-service project in the pipeline at Guerrilla Games. They’ve been quietly working on a cooperative multiplayer Horizon game, which is speculated to be their next release and could hit shelves as early as 2025. Given that the Horizon MMO has been in development for approximately two years, it seems reasonable to expect its launch towards the end of the PS5’s lifespan. When both games do drop, I can’t wait to witness the unique visual differences between them.
