Is The Rise of In-Car Gaming Going Full-Throttle?

As a seasoned gamer with years of gaming experience under my belt, I must admit that the idea of in-car gaming is an intriguing one. I remember those long hours on the road, wishing I could sneak in a quick game to pass the time, and now it seems like my dreams have come true!

As a gaming enthusiast, I never thought I’d find myself discussing in-vehicle gaming, but here we are! Lately, it seems like car makers have been teaming up with game developers to bring popular titles right into our vehicles. This trend, which was somewhat pioneered by Tesla when they enabled users to play Steam games through the onboard computer, is gaining momentum.

This year, Tesla removed that specific feature from its vehicles, yet other automakers have significantly enhanced the in-vehicle gaming experiences.

Passing the Time

On August 26th, Volkswagen revealed a collaboration with AirConsole, a platform that has recently teamed up with BMW. Using the AirConsole system, individuals can pull over and engage in various games directly from their vehicle’s seat. Although the current game selection is quite ordinary, this partnership demonstrates the potential for more innovative experiences in the future.

Currently, users have the option to engage with interactive experiences such as Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (utilizing voice recognition technology) and family-friendly games like Uno. With mobile phones serving as input devices, this means that anyone, whether in the front or back seat of a car, can join in the fun.

Despite eliminating Steam functionality from its offerings, Tesla has retained the capacity to display numerous games such as Stardew Valley, Sky Force, and Fallout Shelter on the car’s in-dash screen.

All of these games are intended for use when your vehicle is stationary, specifically when it’s parked and not just stuck in traffic. The concept is that you can start playing a game while you’re charging your car or during a driving break. It was around a year or two ago that we witnessed games like Cyberpunk being played via Tesla, and it’s expected that we’ll return to such experiences soon enough.
