Highlights

  • Plaques mentioning “Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered” were recently spotted at SDCC 2024.
  • Crystal Dynamics has yet to officially confirm the existence of this project, although its parent company previously acknowledged the fandom’s continued interest in the series.
  • Remastering the iconic Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver games could be the publisher’s way of gauging interest in the franchise before financing a full-fledged sequel.

As a long-time fan of the Legacy of Kain series, I’ve been following the latest developments with bated breath. The possibility of remastered versions of Soul Reaver 1 and 2 has me feeling a mix of excitement and nostalgia. It feels like we’re on the cusp of something special.

It seems that several remastered versions of the classic “Legacy of Kain” games are under development. According to recent information, Crystal Dynamics is actively updating “Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver” and its immediate successor for a more modern experience.

Back in 1996, the dark fantasy action-adventure series known as “Legacy of Kain” was born. However, it has been quiet since 2003. After a long wait of almost twenty years, Embracer Group recognized the clamor of fans for a new installment in this franchise following their acquisition of the IP during their 2022 purchase of Crystal Dynamics.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 and 2 Remasters Teased at SDCC

I was thrilled to discover recent evidence suggesting that the company may be planning to breathe new life into the beloved “Legacy of Kain” series. While it remains uncertain if they will address fan demands, there are promising signs. At San Diego Comic-Con 2024, which started on July 25, attendees had the opportunity to view a display case showcasing “Legacy of Kain” figures accompanied by plaques announcing the remastered versions of “Soul Reaver 1 and 2.”

As a gamer, I’ve noticed something interesting about the new logos on the remastered games developed by Crystal Dynamics. Alongside the Crystal Dynamics emblem, there are also labels showcasing the Embracer Group subsidiary, Dark Horse Comics. A QR code is included in the designation as well, but all it does is direct me to the sign-up page for Dark Horse Direct’s newsletter. This division of DHC specializes in producing limited-edition collectibles. The remasters themselves are referenced through a fresh logo that looks like it borrowed its font from the original 1999 version of “Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver.”

A few weeks after Crystal Dynamics unveiled plans for a prequel novel, “The Dead Shall Rise,” to celebrate the 25th anniversary of “Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver” on August 16, SDCC teasers appeared. Bit Bot Media collaborated with Crystal Dynamics on this graphic novel, which will spearhead a Kickstarter campaign due before the end of 2024. No formal announcements have been made about potential remasters of “Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver,” but these SDCC plaques suggest that such projects are underway.

Reviving beloved old titles like those in the “Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain” series could be Crystal Dynamics’ method for assessing fan enthusiasm before producing a new installment. While the franchise technically began with the 1996 release of “Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain,” it is mainly recognized for its subsequent sequels, with the second one, “Soul Reaver,” being particularly famous. Released in 2001, this game remains a fan favorite due to its captivating characters, thought-provoking themes, and groundbreaking gameplay that allowed players to transition between the physical and spectral realms to overcome challenges and explore the game’s environment.
