It Took ARC Raiders One Weekend To Save Extraction Shooters

The recent test event for ARC Raiders has ended, but even though it only lasted a weekend, it’s already changed how people are talking about extraction shooter games. For the first time in a while, this type of game is being seen as more than just a temporary trend.

It’s debatable whether this genre ever deserved its reputation, but the most popular extraction shooter games haven’t actually made the genre broadly popular.

I knew I couldn’t be completely unbiased when evaluating this game. I’ve always been a fan of shooters, and often gravitate towards them, so ARC Raiders immediately appealed to me. Playing it during the spring test confirmed my initial feeling – I really enjoyed it.

I was surprised to see so many people who typically dislike extraction shooter games – even those who actively hate them – expressing their enthusiasm for ARC Raiders and the genre in general.

Recently, there was a lot of disappointment when ARC Raiders was announced as an extraction shooter. However, after a preview of the game, excitement has built, and players are eagerly awaiting its release on October 30th.

The Impact of the ARC Raiders Open Test

While player numbers aren’t everything, the recent ARC Raiders test on SteamDB showed a strong turnout. The game peaked with nearly 190,000 players on Friday, followed by over 183,000 on Saturday and almost 148,000 on Sunday.

Looking at similar launches, Battlefield 6 had a strong open beta in August. It peaked with 521,079 players on the first Saturday, and daily peak numbers ranged from 242,733 to 408,754 throughout the test period.

Both games can be played on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. While PC players are spread across different online stores, ARC Raiders has significantly less money for advertising. In contrast, the public test for the upcoming Battlefield 6 was a huge success.

While it’s hard to measure, what’s really stood out to me about ARC Raiders is what people have been saying about their experiences playing it.

Okay, so there was this guy, usually pretty quiet and seems totally uninterested, but suddenly he was *really* into the game, talking all about quests and how challenging it is! And get this – my friends, who usually complain about these kinds of games, like extraction shooters or even player-versus-player stuff, spent the whole weekend checking out the Dam Battlegrounds and actually helping each other out. It was wild!

The new shooter everyone’s been waiting for is unique – it’s an ‘extraction shooter,’ and that’s a good thing! While this type of game hasn’t always been popular, ARC Raiders proved how enjoyable they can be in just a week, after nearly ten years of waiting for a standout title.

ARC Raiders is set to release on October 30th on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.
