After gradually developing for several years, HBO’s horror series “IT: Welcome to Derly” has unveiled its first poster, accompanied by additional character images as part of Max’s 2025 sneak peek. The series “IT: Welcome to Derly” is a prequel spin-off from the 2017 release of “IT”, featuring Sophia Lillis and Finn Wolfhard, who starred in “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” and “Stranger Things” respectively, among the group of children tormented by the titular entity in the town of Derry.
Back in 1986, horror maestro Stephen King penned the chilling tale that would become “IT,” a novel that has left an indelible mark on the genre. Previously adapted for television in 1998, this adaptation remains a horror legend. Fast forward to 2023, and HBO Max decided it was time to breathe new life into Derry with “IT: Welcome to Derry.” I’m thrilled to be part of the team that brings you this fresh take on the story, under the guidance of director Andy Muschietti, producer Barbara Muschietti, and co-producer Jason Fuchs—the same visionaries behind the 2017 film and its sequel from 2019, which saw our beloved Derry kids all grown up.
IT: Welcome to Derry Prequel Series Releases First Poster

The initial teaser for “Welcome to Derry” features a spooky wooden sign displaying the show’s emblem, standing before a field shrouded in mist. Meanwhile, Max, HBO’s streaming platform, has published a 2025 sneak peek video featuring glimpses of upcoming productions, among which are fresh clips of the Derry children looking worried and a character portrayed by Jovan Adepo giving a familiar chuckle while gazing at a red balloon. This information follows Andy Muschietti’s earlier announcement that “IT: Welcome to Derry” is planning for a three-season run, and it has also been confirmed that season 1 will encompass nine episodes with Chris Chalk, Taylour Paige, Stephen Rider, and others taking on major roles.
Enthusiasts of horror stories are eagerly awaiting the exploration into unexplored realms with IT: Welcome to Derry, and to reassure book readers, director Andy Muschietti confirmed that Stephen King played a significant role in the series’ development. The recently unveiled poster sparked enthusiasm, yet some fans have expressed concern due to the lack of a definite release date, which has led to speculation that the series may not premiere until 2026. Others voiced concerns about maintaining the original storyline, but many have faith in HBO, given their successful adaptations of Game of Thrones and The Last of Us. Moreover, viewers are eager to witness the early history of Derry, Maine unfold on screen, along with insights into the Eater of Worlds’ origins.
A complete IT project wouldn’t be imagined without the famous yet chilling Pennywise. During the initial adaptation, Tim Curry sent shivers down viewers’ spines, but now it’s Bill SkarsgÃ¥rd who portrays the modern-day clown, and he hinted that “Welcome to Derry” would be intense. Having donned Pennywise for the previous two movies, SkarsgÃ¥rd once again wore prosthetics in Robert Eggers’ 2024 Nosferatu adaptation, where he played Count Orlok. In “Welcome to Derry,” fans can expect SkarsgÃ¥rd back in Pennywise’s large headgear, leaving behind the mustache of Nosferatu, ready to play the dancing antagonist for a third time. Fans are getting ready for many terrifying jumpscares due to his performance.
IT: Welcome to Derry is expected to be released later in 2025 on HBO.
