HBO has released a first look at Season 3 of House of the Dragon, and it suggests trouble for those who supported Aegon II (Team Green). After winning the throne and sending Rhaenyra Targaryen away, Team Green controlled King’s Landing throughout Aegon’s reign – until he was killed by his brother, Aemond. The new teaser hints that their time in power is about to end.
With Alicent Hightower captured, Rhaenyra plans to use her to gain access to the Red Keep and finally seize King’s Landing, claiming the Iron Throne as her father, Viserys I Targaryen, wished. The latest trailer for House of the Dragon Season 3 strongly suggests the Fall of King’s Landing, a pivotal battle in the Dance of the Dragons that would dramatically shift the balance of power in Rhaenyra Targaryen’s favor.
The House of the Dragon Season 3 Teaser Shows the Fall of King’s Landing

Fans familiar with George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood will recognize that the House of the Dragon Season 3 preview reveals significant events from the Sack of King’s Landing. As Rhaenyra intended, Alicent enters the Red Keep with the Kingsguard and warns Aemond (who is now sitting on the Iron Throne, holding Blackfyre) that Rhaenyra plans to use her Dragonseeds to reclaim the city.
The teaser also reveals supporters of Team Green protecting the Iron Throne, and Daemon fighting through enemy soldiers with his Valyrian steel sword, Dark Sister. One striking scene shows a dragon breathing fire in a narrow street, echoing Daenerys’ destruction of King’s Landing in Game of Thrones Season 8, Episode 5, “The Bells.” If House of the Dragon Season 3 sticks to the book’s timeline, the fall of King’s Landing will probably happen within the first three episodes.
This is the Moment Rhaenyra Becomes Queen
If Rhaenyra becomes Queen early in Season 3 of House of the Dragon, the rest of the season will explore her time ruling, while also laying the groundwork for the show’s final season. However, fans of Game of Thrones will recall that history doesn’t look kindly on Rhaenyra. She isn’t considered a legitimate ruler in the larger story; by the time of Game of Thrones, Aegon II Targaryen was historically recognized as the rightful king following the Dance of the Dragons.
Rhaenyra’s time as queen will be marked by conflict and hardship. Throughout the third season of House of the Dragon, she’ll face several personal tragedies that contribute to her growing instability. The source material, Fire & Blood, even suggests the Iron Throne itself will seem to reject her rule. As House of the Dragon continues into seasons three and four, the show will likely explore the flaws in Rhaenyra’s character, revealing a darker side as she struggles with the familiar Targaryen descent into madness and begins to lose the support of her people and allies.
