Now, more than two years later, Tekken 8 is experiencing similar problems again.
Man, when Tekken 8 first came out, it was awesome! It was a huge hit, right up there with games like Black Ops 6 and Helldivers 2 in terms of sales. Everyone – critics and players like me – were loving it. But things quickly went downhill. All this drama with microtransactions and how they kept messing with the game balance really hurt the developers’ reputation. Bandai Namco said they’d fix it, but honestly, I haven’t seen much improvement yet. It’s a shame, because it had so much potential.
Fans Review Bomb Tekken 8 After Season 3 Repeats Season 2’s Balancing Missteps
As a big Tekken 8 fan, I was really hoping the Season 3 update, which dropped on March 17th, would fix the problems everyone had with Season 2. Unfortunately, it hasn’t gone well at all. The game got absolutely slammed with negative reviews right away – 243 negative to only 26 positive! And it’s been that way ever since, with way more people disappointed than happy. As of today, Tekken 8 is sitting at a “Mostly Negative” rating on Steam. Looking at the reviews, it seems like Season 3 is making the same mistakes as Season 2, focusing too much on making offense stronger instead of fixing the defensive issues players were already frustrated with.
Players reacted strongly to the updates Bandai released with Season 2 in April 2024, finding them overly aggressive. This was particularly frustrating because early reviews had already noted the game favored offensive playstyles. The negative feedback became so intense that Bandai Namco completely replaced the Tekken 8 balancing team within a month. They put Kohei Ikeda, known as Nakatsu, in charge of future adjustments. This seemed promising, considering Nakatsu’s successful balancing work on Tekken 7 and Tekken Tag Tournament 2. Bandai also released several quick updates to address the issues following the season launch. However, it now appears those changes might not reflect how the game will be balanced going forward.

As a long-time Tekken fan, it’s honestly frustrating to see the community getting disappointed again with Tekken 8. We keep hoping for improvements, but it feels like the same issues keep popping up. There’s been some negative reviews lately, though it hasn’t been quite as intense as the reaction to Season 2. It’s definitely not the start Bandai Namco wanted for Season 3. It’s not just balance changes either; people are really upset about how the game is monetized. Everyone agrees the game looks amazing and has a lot of content, but those positives aren’t enough to overshadow the gameplay problems and the frustrating microtransactions.
While Bandai Namco could still improve things after the recent negative reviews, the game’s future isn’t clear. Things are even more uncertain now that Katsuhiro Harada, the longtime director of Tekken, has left the company. Season 3 of Tekken 8 is the first big update released without him, so it will be interesting to see how the game evolves with new leadership.
