It’s Official: Every Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Player Should Use This Mon for Online Battles

Online ranked battles in Pokemon Legends: Z-A are proving to be a thrilling way for players to compete against each other. The game’s updated battle system means that matches in the Z-A Battle Club now feature four players battling it out in real-time. With more people playing, it’s become apparent that there’s one Pokemon that nearly every successful team includes.

So, I’m jumping into the online battles in Pokemon Legends: Z-A to get that Mega Greninja, and honestly, everyone’s trying to hit rank K for the Greninjite. It’s different than the normal battles, though – you can only bring 3 Pokemon and you can’t switch them out as much as you’d like. But even with those rules, Mega Gyarados is still a beast and surprisingly easy to get on your team. I’m definitely thinking of building my team around it!

Mega Gyarados is the Meta for Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Online Ranked Battles

Gyarados is a strong Pokémon that’s relatively easy to get early in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, giving your team a significant advantage. You can find Magikarp in Wild Zone 2, and it evolves into Gyarados at Level 20. Leveling up is straightforward – just use Exp. Candy or Tackle Mega Crystals. After completing the tenth main story mission, you can buy Gyarados’s Mega Stone from Quasartico for 240 Mega Shards.

The Best Mega Gyarados Setup for Competitive Legends: Z-A Battles

Stat Base Number
HP 95
Attack 155
Defense 109
Sp. Attack 70
Sp. Defense 130
Speed 81
Total 640
  • Waterfall
  • Crunch
  • Ice Fang
  • Protect or Earthquake

When Gyarados Mega Evolves, it changes type, losing its Flying attribute and becoming Water/Dark. This allows it to use powerful Dark-type attacks. As a strong physical attacker, Mega Gyarados can effectively use moves like Waterfall and Crunch for maximum damage, and Ice Fang to hit Flying and Dragon-type Pokemon. The final move slot should be either Protect or Earthquake; Earthquake helps against Electric types, while Protect is a strong defensive option in Pokemon Legends Z-A, though it can be tricky to use well.

Why Mega Gyarados is Such a Threat in Online Battles

Mega Gyarados is a dominant force in Pokemon Legends: Z-A‘s online battles thanks to its well-rounded stats and diverse move options. It’s incredibly durable, with high Defense and Special Defense stats (109 and 130 respectively), plus a solid HP base of 95, allowing it to withstand a lot of damage. This survivability is crucial in the Z-A Battle Club’s four-player free-for-all format, and Mega Gyarados can both take hits and deal significant damage in return thanks to its Speed and Attack power.

Takes 2x Damage From Grass, Electric, Fighting, Bug, Fairy
Takes Normal (1x) Damage From Normal, Poison, Ground, Flying, Rock, Dragon
Takes 0.5x Damage From Fire, Water, Ice, Ghost, Dark, Steel
Immune (0x) to Damage From Psychic

Mega Gyarados becomes both more vulnerable and more resilient compared to its regular form. While it gains new weaknesses, it also picks up additional resistances and loses its critical four-times weakness to Electric attacks. It trades immunity to Ground-type moves for immunity to Psychic-type moves instead. These changes make Mega Gyarados a surprisingly tough defensive Pokémon, which is beneficial in the current battle environment that favors durable Pokémon. Although the competitive scene for Pokemon Legends: Z-A is still developing and could shift significantly, players aiming to compete now would be smart to include a Mega Gyarados on their team to maximize their chances of winning.
