Sony recently announced price hikes for the PlayStation 5, and those changes have now taken effect. The PlayStation 5, which first came out in 2020, is available in two versions. When it launched, the standard PS5 with a disc drive cost $499.99, and the Digital Edition was priced at $449.99.
Due to issues with RAM supply and the current global economic situation, gaming and PC parts are becoming more costly. Unlike video game consoles which usually decrease in price, the PlayStation 5 has been getting more expensive. Sony has already increased the PS5’s price once, and they’ve just raised it again.
PS5 Consoles Get Price Hikes
The new, higher prices for the PS5 are now official, but some stores might still be selling consoles at the older, lower prices, so it’s worth checking around for a deal. Currently, the standard PS5 with a disc drive costs $649.99, the Digital Edition is $599.99, and the PS5 Pro costs $899.99. While prices could potentially drop in the future, there are no announced plans for that to happen. This means you’ll likely have to pay the new, higher price unless you find a retailer still offering a discount.
As of today, Amazon is selling PlayStation 5 consoles at their original prices. A standard PS5 with a disc drive is available for $550, a savings from the current price of $649.99. The digital edition is priced at $499. The PS5 Pro isn’t currently in stock, though availability can change. Please note that these prices may not last long, as they were accurate at the time this was written but could increase at any time.
The price increase for the PS5 couldn’t have happened at a more frustrating time for gamers. With Grand Theft Auto 6 coming out on November 19th, and no PC version available at launch, players will need a PS5 or Xbox Series X/S to play it right away. GTA 6 is a major game that could finally push people to buy a new console, and many have likely been waiting for its release. Now, those who’ve held off on getting a PS5 will have to pay a higher price if they want to play GTA 6 when it launches on November 19th.
Sony increasing the price of the PS5 is a worrying sign for the future of gaming consoles. Although Sony hasn’t revealed much about the PlayStation 6, it’s likely to arrive around 2027 or 2028. Unless the economy improves dramatically, the PS6 could be even pricier than the PS5 Pro – potentially costing over $1,000. This would make it one of the most expensive consoles ever released, and that’s before considering the possible cost of a rumored handheld version.
Historically, console gaming has been a more budget-friendly option than PC gaming, but that difference is shrinking. Consoles are becoming increasingly expensive, making it harder for people to afford the newest games and limiting access for many. This is a concerning trend, and hopefully prices will become more accessible in the future.
