It’s Officially the End of a Streak for WWE Games

For a long time, WWE had performers known as “lifers” – wrestlers so closely tied to the company that they seemed destined to stay until retirement. Stars like Randy Orton, The Miz, Roman Reigns, the Usos, Seth Rollins, Charlotte Flair, Triple H, and The Undertaker all fit that description. However, with the recent departure of Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods from WWE, it’s clear that the era of wrestlers staying with the company for their entire careers is now over.

The departure of Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods marks the end of a significant run with WWE games. Kofi signed with WWE in 2006 and officially joined the ECW brand in 2008, while Xavier joined in 2010 after a brief time with TNA, eventually moving to the main roster in 2013. The two quickly formed The New Day with Big E, becoming a record-breaking and defining tag team. Beyond their in-ring success, they’ve made a major impact on WWE through projects like UpUpDownDown and Xavier Woods’ involvement with the MyGM mode in WWE 2K, as well as their frequent appearances in commercials. This makes The New Day one of the most memorable tag teams of all time, and their long-standing presence in the video games is a testament to their legacy.

It’s the End of The New Day Era

As a long-time fan, I’ve always noticed Kofi and Xavier popping up in almost every WWE video game! It’s amazing to me that Kofi’s been in every main WWE game since SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 – that’s seventeen out of the twenty-six total, plus another ten smaller spin-off games! Xavier’s also a regular, appearing in eleven of the main games and six spin-offs (not counting his time in TNA), according to The SmackDown Hotel. They’re definitely video game veterans!

With the release of Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods, they won’t be featured in WWE 2K27. Just a few years ago, that would have been hard to believe. However, the impact on their personal lives is the most important thing to consider. Both Kofi and Xavier are talented enough to succeed outside of WWE. Several wrestlers from AEW have already publicly expressed interest in signing them, and WWE hadn’t been utilizing them effectively anyway. The New Day’s turn towards being villains in December 2024 didn’t lead to anything significant, not because of Kofi or Xavier, but because of a lack of creative direction in WWE’s current booking.

Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods were reportedly asked to adjust their WWE contracts to match the new terms TKO is using, but they weren’t pleased with the proposed changes. They’ve decided to leave the company on good terms, which makes sense. What they’ll do next is still unknown, but they have a lot of potential and could achieve great things.

Today is a disappointing day for WWE’s tag team wrestling and for fans of the WWE video games. However, it marks a fresh start for Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods. The huge amount of fan support following their recent announcement clearly shows that WWE and TKO still don’t fully appreciate the talent they possess.
