This post contains SPOILERS for Stranger Things Season 5 Vol. 1
In the fourth season of Stranger Things, Eleven defeated Vecna, also known as Henry Creel. Despite his defeat, Vecna nearly succeeded in opening a gateway between the Upside Down and our world. As a result, Hawkins has been cut off from the outside world to prevent the supernatural threat from spreading.
The military is heavily researching the Upside Down while Eleven and her friends are determined to defeat Vecna. After a long build-up, Vecna finally emerges and proves incredibly powerful, overwhelming those who oppose him. He even confronts his original victim, Will, leading many viewers to fear for Will’s life. Surprisingly, Vecna doesn’t kill Will, despite eliminating almost everyone else. The reason for this unexpected mercy is actually quite straightforward.
Vecna Doesn’t Kill Will Byers Because He Considers The Boy “Weak”
Yes, It was Vecna’s Biggest Mistake In Stranger Things Season 5

When Vecna confronts Will, he reveals the reason he initially targeted him: he saw Will as vulnerable. Vecna doesn’t even consider Mike worthy of a direct attack, instead choosing to torment Will by unleashing Demogorgons to kill those close to him – his mother and friends – right before his eyes. Vecna intended Will to be a helpless witness, further breaking him. While things don’t unfold exactly as Vecna plans, this was his cruel attempt to demoralize Will.
Matt Duffer, in a Variety interview, explained why Vecna didn’t target Will Byers in Season 5 of Stranger Things. According to Duffer, Vecna “completely underestimates Will.”
Honestly, the way this character sees the other guy is just heartbreaking. He’s already written him off – sees him as weak, insignificant, someone who’s just not capable of anything impressive. It’s a total underestimation, and you can feel it in that scene. He doesn’t see the potential at all.
Vecna considered Will to be the most vulnerable person to manipulate emotionally and psychologically. It’s no surprise that Will often appears frightened, given the intense trauma he experienced in the Upside Down. However, his fear goes deeper than just those events; it’s rooted in his struggle to come to terms with his true self.
It’s clear Will has feelings for Mike right away, but he struggles to admit them, even to himself. He doubts what he’s feeling, which makes him insecure around his friends. Vecna recognizes this vulnerability and exploits it to hurt Will.
Will, you were the first one I experimented on. You were so vulnerable, and you revealed to me just how much power I could wield. – Vecna to Will
In Season 5, Will finally overcomes his biggest challenge at a critical moment. Remembering Robin’s advice to look inward for strength, he stops relying on others, like Mike. When Vecna retreats and unleashes his monsters, Will taps into the Hive Mind and discovers a newfound confidence. In a clever and powerful move, he destroys the Demogorgons using a method mirroring Vecna’s own abilities – a truly impressive response after being belittled by the monster.
It would be incredible to witness Vecna’s reaction when Will discovers his full potential. The boy he once dismissed as weak will now be a powerful opponent, fighting alongside Eleven, Eight, and the rest of the group. We’ll finally get to see this showdown in the second part of Stranger Things Season 5.
