It’s The End of an Era For Avatar

As a lifelong movie fan, I’m starting to worry about the future of actually going to the cinema. Even James Cameron, the guy behind Avatar, thinks things are changing. His third Avatar film, Fire and Ash, came out right before Christmas 2025, but he’s now publicly said he’s concerned about whether the Avatar movies – and going to the movies in general – will still be a big thing in the years to come. It’s a little unsettling, honestly.

The movie industry is currently facing a lot of uncertainty. Netflix, a major streaming service, is in the process of acquiring Warner Bros. for a massive $72 billion, which would be one of the largest deals ever. Netflix is also considering a new approach where movies would play in theaters for 17 days before becoming available on their streaming platform.

With so many entertainment options now available at home – a habit many picked up during the pandemic – it’s unclear if people will return to theaters as often for new movie releases. Current box office numbers suggest audiences are happy to wait and watch films when they become available on streaming services, and this trend is likely to continue.

Avatar 3’s Box Office Will Decide Avatar 4 and 5’s Fate

Cameron recently discussed with TVBS News how the performance of Avatar 3 will determine if Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 are ever made. Because these films require incredibly complex and expensive special effects, the Avatar movies are very costly to produce. To justify the expense, they need to be financially successful at the box office.

Disney has announced release dates for the next two Avatar films: Avatar 4 will arrive in theaters on December 21, 2029, and Avatar 5 is scheduled for December 19, 2031. However, setting a release date doesn’t necessarily mean these movies will definitely be made.

James Cameron Addresses Massive Avatar Production Costs

Cameron didn’t share the exact budget for Fire and Ash during his interview on Matthew Belloni’s podcast, “The Town.” However, he explained that whether or not Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 get made will depend on how well Fire and Ash performs.

Cameron explained that the movie’s budget was incredibly high, meaning they needed to earn double that amount just to break even. He’s confident the film will be profitable, but he’s unsure if the earnings will be significant enough to warrant a sequel.

James Cameron is determined to finish the Avatar saga and bring the story to a satisfying conclusion. However, he’s also realistic and willing to stop if the next film, Fire and Ash, doesn’t perform well. Fortunately, fans needn’t worry about the story being left unfinished, as Cameron already has a plan in place.

“There’s one open thread. I’ll write a book!” Cameron said.
