It’s Time To Accept The Death Of The Legendary Rinnegan In The Boruto Series

This article contains spoilers from the Boruto series.

The Rinnegan is an incredibly powerful ability introduced in the later part of the Naruto series. It was legendary within the story, often compared to the Six Paths Senjutsu, and highly sought after by many. Those who possessed the Rinnegan were considered god-like, and it was clearly a step above even the Mangekyo Sharingan, establishing it as one of the most powerful abilities in the entire Naruto universe.

It’s disappointing that the Rinnegan has become essentially useless in the Boruto series. It’s reached a point where fans should probably accept that it no longer plays an important role in the story. While the Rinnegan still appears, it doesn’t contribute much to the plot, which is a shame.

The Rinnegan Is The Strongest Of The Three Great Dojutsu

  • Wielded First By The Sage of Six Paths
  • Awakened By Sasuke and Madara Uchiha

As a huge Naruto fan, I’m always fascinated by the different eye powers! The Rinnegan is considered one of the three most powerful – the Great Dojutsu, as some call them. We met the Byakugan and Sharingan right away in the series, but the Rinnegan took a bit longer to reveal itself. It’s so cool to learn that the Byakugan actually comes from the original ancestor, Kaguya Otsutsuki! She passed it down to her son Hamura, and then it continued through his descendants, the Hyuga clan. It’s amazing how these powers are linked to the very beginning of the ninja world!

I’ve always been amazed by the Byakugan. It gives its user incredible vision – not just the ability to see through things like an X-ray, but also to see objects from a huge distance. What’s even more impressive is that it lets you see a person’s chakra pathways – their entire energy system! It’s almost a complete 360-degree view, with just a small blind spot right at the base of the spine. It’s no surprise the Hyuga clan are so well-known in the Naruto world; the Byakugan is a truly powerful ability.

Besides the Six Paths technique, the Rinnegan has a powerful ability called the Outer Path. It grants its user control over life and death. Konan explains to Naruto that Nagato is sacrificing himself because he believes in him.

The Sharingan, a unique ability of the Uchiha clan, is considered one of the most impressive powers in the Naruto universe. It develops in response to intense emotional trauma, like shock or the loss of a loved one. This powerful eye allows the user to see through any ninja technique – whether it’s physical, illusionary, or based on natural elements. Beyond that, it can replicate almost any jutsu (except those considered rare or secret family techniques), and even cast incredibly strong illusions of its own. The Sharingan also enhances vision and allows users to precisely copy movements.

The Rinnegan is an incredibly powerful ability in the Naruto series, possessed by only a handful of individuals. It originated with Hagoromo Otsutsuki, known as the Sage of Six Paths, and was a natural part of his being. After Hagoromo, the Rinnegan could only be unlocked by combining the chakra of his two sons, Indra and Asura.

Madara Uchiha was the first person to awaken the Rinnegan, achieving this by taking and integrating flesh from Hashirama. Hashirama himself briefly awakened the Rinnegan near death and later transplanted it into Nagato. After Nagato’s death, Obito obtained the Rinnegan, but it eventually returned to Madara. Besides Madara, Sasuke Uchiha is the only other known individual to have naturally awakened the Rinnegan, receiving the power directly from the Sage of Six Paths during the Ninja War.

The Powers Of The Rinngan

The Rinnegan is widely considered the most powerful of the three Great Dojutsu. While it can’t see chakra pathways like some other eyes, it grants the user access to the Six Paths Powers – a unique set of six incredibly powerful abilities. Each of these paths gives the user a god-like skill.

Light always comes with darkness, and triumph always creates loss. The pursuit of peace, when driven by self-interest, often leads to conflict. Even love finds its roots in hatred. — Madara Uchiha, Naruto

Rinnegan users possess incredible power, able to both attract and repel objects at will, and even create a planetary object to imprison others. Beyond that, they can absorb any ninja technique, steal chakra through touch, and utilize mechanical enhancements. They heal almost instantly, can extract souls, and summon creatures. Most impressively, Rinnegan users control life and death, even reviving people immediately. It’s clear the Rinnegan was the most powerful ability in the Naruto series, but its significance has diminished in Boruto.

The Rinnegan Has Become Irrelevant In The Boruto Series

  • Sasuke’s Rinnegan has been severely nerfed in Boruto
  • Sasuke eventually lost his Rinnegan

The Rinnegan is widely considered to be an extremely powerful ability, and fans recognize this. However, in the Boruto series, only Sasuke possesses this power. Surprisingly, Sasuke doesn’t fully utilize the Rinnegan’s potential. The manga primarily shows him using only one of its abilities, Amenotejikara. The other, more powerful Six Paths techniques are rarely seen, despite being the Rinnegan’s strongest features.

Besides Sasuke, characters like Momoshiki Otsutsuki have displayed the Rinnegan, but neither he nor others, including the Shinju, actually use its full potential. They primarily focus on absorbing and releasing chakra – a special ability unique to Momoshiki’s Rinnegan. Considering how the Rinnegan has been portrayed in the Boruto series, it seems the power it grants is largely ineffective or unused.

The incredible powers associated with the Rinnegan, often called the Six Paths Powers, are largely absent in the Boruto series, making it seem like the Rinnegan doesn’t have any special abilities. It’s gotten to the point where the Rinnegan and the Mangekyo Sharingan feel equally powerful. Like Mangekyo users who depend on unique eye techniques, the Rinnegan has been simplified to the same level. In some ways, Sarada’s Mangekyo Sharingan appears more powerful than Sasuke’s Rinnegan. While Sasuke can teleport, Sarada can manipulate gravity, giving her the ability to overwhelm opponents with immense force.

It’s really disappointing to see the Rinnegan basically disappear in Boruto. It felt even worse when Sasuke lost his eye to Momoshiki – a powerful technique gone, just like that! Now, within the shinobi world, the Rinnegan is effectively extinct, and honestly, it feels like the story’s almost forgotten about it, as if it doesn’t even matter to the Shinju anymore. It’s a shame, because it was such a unique and important ability.

It’s Time To Admit That Boruto Ruined The Rinnegan Forever

The Rinnegan was once considered the most powerful eye ability in the Naruto universe, adding a lot of excitement and depth to the story. However, in the Boruto series, its power has diminished significantly, and it’s no longer the impressive ability it once was. Many fans feel the Rinnegan has been weakened to the point of being irredeemable, and while there’s a small hope the creator might restore its former glory, it’s unlikely to happen.

Boruto: Two Blue Vortex is the continuation of the Boruto story, created by Mikio Ikemoto and with supervision from Masashi Kishimoto. The series picks up three years after the events of the Omnipotence arc, and follows Boruto Uzumaki as he works to protect the world alongside his brother, Kawaki. Chapter 30 is scheduled to be released on January 20, 2026, at 10 AM EST / 3 PM UTC. Fans can read it for free on the Manga Plus and Shonen Jump apps.
