It’s Time To Accept The Death Of The Original Main Character Of Jujutsu Kaisen

This article contains spoilers from Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo.

Fans of Jujutsu Kaisen were thrilled when Gege Akutami announced a new manga taking place in the same universe with a fresh cast of characters. The announcement of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, a sequel to the original series, had fans eager to revisit the world they loved. However, it was soon revealed that Modulo is set 68 years in the future, indicating significant changes to the world and, unfortunately, the deaths of several major characters.

From the start, it was made clear that Yuta Okkotsu and Maki Zenin had died. This left fans concerned about what happened to the other key characters. While the fate of Yuji Itadori is still uncertain, it seems Megumi Fushiguro has likely met his end. Surprisingly, despite being Gege’s original choice for the main character, Megumi is probably dead, considering he hasn’t been mentioned and a significant amount of time has passed.

Megumi Fushiguro Is Most Likely Dead In Jujutsu Kaisen

  • Most JJK characters should be dead by now
  • There is no mention of Megumi in JJK Modulo

Nearly seven decades after the events of the Shinjuku Showdown, most of the main characters from Jujutsu Kaisen would be either deceased or very elderly. Considering they’d likely be in their 80s or even 90s, it’s improbable many would still be alive. This applies to Megumi Fushiguro as well; he would likely be in his 80s now, making his survival unlikely.

Start by saving me, Itadori Yuji. — Megumi to Yuji, Culling Game

If a powerful sorcerer like Maki Zenin were to die of old age, it would mean Megumi Fushiguro has virtually no chance of survival. Yuji Itadori fighting on his own is also a major indication that Megumi is likely already gone, which is devastating for fans. It’s especially painful knowing that a continuation of the story could have shown us Megumi reaching his full potential.

Megumi Was Gege’s Original Main Character

Many fans are curious about why Megumi Fushiguro could be considered the original main character of Jujutsu Kaisen. Before the series began, creator Gege Akutami initially planned for Megumi to be the protagonist. In that early version, Megumi was meant to be the one to contain Ryomen Sukuna – a role that ultimately carried over to the current storyline in the Culling Game. Yuji Itadori, in contrast, was originally intended as a supporting character with a less significant connection to Sukuna.

Yuji Itadori offered Sukuna a fresh start, declaring his willingness to accept him – a statement made during their confrontation in Shinjuku.

It’s unclear exactly how they were related, but it seems they were connected by family. Originally, the character Nobara wasn’t part of the story; Tsumiki was planned to be the third member of the group in early drafts of Jujutsu Kaisen. While the author, Gege, ultimately changed things, that doesn’t matter now. The important thing is that Megumi Fushiguro is definitely dead.

Yuji Itadori Is Still Alive In Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo

Although Megumi Fushiguro appears to have died in Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, Yuji Itadori is still alive. This was recently confirmed in the manga, suggesting fans will see more of his story soon. Yuji has aged significantly in Modulo, likely because he was born by Kenjaku and shares a connection with the Death Paintings, who have lived for over 150 years.

Yuji has a unique ability that lets him survive situations others can’t, essentially giving him a ‘second chance’ at life. Fans are hoping that when Yuji Itadori returns in Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, he’ll discuss Megumi Fushiguro and Nobara Kugisaki.

It would be nice if Gege Akutami showed Yuji remembering his old friends, and explained how they died over time. Because Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo is a short series, we’ll probably find out soon, and fans are eager to see what happens with the new characters.

The sequel to Jujutsu Kaisen, titled Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, is currently being published in Weekly Shonen Jump. Chapter 12 is scheduled to come out on November 23, 2025, at midnight in Japan (11:00 AM Eastern Time, 8:00 AM Pacific Time). Readers can access the chapter without charge on Manga Plus and through the Shonen Jump app.
