As a longtime fan of DC Comics and their small-screen adaptations, I must say that the Arrowverse was truly a remarkable journey. Having grown up watching Superman and Batman on television, seeing these characters finally come to life on The CW was nothing short of magical. But among all the heroes and villains that graced our screens, none captured my heart quite like the unlikely duo of Oliver Queen (Arrow) and Barry Allen (The Flash).

Regardless of personal feelings, the Arrowverse has concluded its run with the finale of Superman & Lois. As we bid farewell to this universe, it’s worth recalling the excitement DC Comics fans experienced when they saw their beloved characters grace the small screen in the Arrowverse. Although Superman & Lois may have been the most recognized faces on The CW, they were certainly not the only ones. In discussing the Arrowverse, there was a veritable army of heroes that found a home on this network.

As a fan myself, I can attest that the favorite shows someone might have watched from the CW’s Arrowverse would vary greatly. For me, it was the unique blend of time-travel adventure and superhero action that made “Legends of Tomorrow” stand out among the rest. On the other hand, “Supergirl” offered an engaging take on the classic heroine and her circle, much like Superman & Lois. But when it comes to my personal preference for a dynamic duo from this universe, there’s no denying the charm and camaraderie of the unlikely pair – Oliver Queen from “Arrow” and Barry Allen from “The Flash.” They truly embody an unforgettable odd couple in the Arrowverse.

Flash And Green Arrow’s Friendship Always Shone Through

One reason Arrow and Flash were both highly favored for quite a while is that their titular characters were remarkably distinct. Essentially, Oliver Queen’s Arrow served as The CW’s version of Batman. Unlike other adaptations, the network couldn’t directly reference the character, so he was portrayed as a billionaire playboy and crimefighter. His transformation into a crimefighter was steeped in some extremely grim training. He was serious-minded, generally assumed the worst about people, and took a long time to trust anyone.

In the realm of Arrowverse characters, Oliver Queen served as its brooding vigilante, reminiscent of a dark avenger. Conversely, Barry Allen embodied the role of our universe’s optimistic superhero, akin to Superman – a character who initially couldn’t be hinted at during these shows’ early stages. Barry was known for his cheerful and upbeat demeanor, in stark contrast to Oliver. Though he could display seriousness or anger when necessary, Barry was essentially a hero who saw the best in people. Unlike The Arrow, who initially resorted to killing and required persuasion to spare lives during crime-fighting, Barry was adamant about avoiding taking lives at all costs; he would even go out of his way to avoid it.

In the time when the Arrowverse consisted of numerous shows, cross-overs were commonplace. On various occasions, Arrow and The Flash would intersect, joining forces to tackle challenges head-on. While Oliver Queen might have been reluctant to acknowledge it, their camaraderie was palpable. They seemed to recognize that they complemented each other exceptionally well, which gradually transformed their bond from friendship into a strong brotherhood. This unique dynamic allowed viewers to enjoy the best of both heroes without delay.

The Villains Always Took A Back Seat

In their individual series, the villains were strong and intriguing adversaries, but when Barry and Oliver shared the screen, the antagonists often took a backseat in importance. This became noticeable right from the start of their crossover episodes.

Due to their distinct personalities, the joint appearances created an exceptional mix of humorous and emotional scenes, especially between Barry and Oliver, which became a signature aspect of future collaborations. The actors, particularly Grant Gustin from The Flash and Stephen Amell from Arrow, skillfully adapted their performances for these scenes. This versatility partially explains why the friendship between them is so convincing. Regardless if it’s a major crossover or a brief guest appearance in one another’s series, Oliver and Barry will always support each other. The extensive storytelling across numerous episodes enabled the writers to develop this bond progressively over time.

As a movie enthusiast, I’ve always found that when those villains graced the screen, they seemed surprisingly easy to vanquish. This wasn’t a flaw in the storylines or the scriptwriting, but rather a testament to how exceptional the duo of Queen and Allen were as teammates. Even though their partnership was limited to a handful of encounters each year at best, their chemistry was undeniable.

Superman & Lois Was Cheated Out Of These Kinds of Crossovers

In the end, Batwoman and Superman became part of the Arrowverse, but it was towards the close of that series’ life span. Regrettably, by the time Superman & Lois began to gain traction, the Arrowverse was already winding down its storylines.

To a certain extent, the last episode missed out on the crossovers that made The CW’s other shows so enjoyable. However, avoiding those crossovers for the final episode helped create a unique relationship between Barry and Ollie that stood out in the network’s lineup. Now that they’re both off the air, it’s worth re-watching them to appreciate the exceptional Arrowverse duo.
