Enthusiasts of Role-Playing Games (RPGs) often find themselves playing the same title multiple times to uncover details overlooked during their initial playthrough, and that’s exactly where games like Avowed shine. This is because, much like other RPGs, there are several possible endings based on your decisions throughout the game, some of which may be challenging to stumble upon unless you’re deliberately attempting to find them.
The game isn’t particularly lengthy – Even for thorough players, the estimated time to finish it all is less than 60 hours. In comparison, some games in this category might require over 100 hours to complete.
Currently, I’m not deeply invested in the various conclusions the game offers, and I haven’t reached the point where I’ve encountered crucial choices or feel compelled to revisit earlier decisions due to regret. Instead, I’m captivated by the game’s rich role-playing aspect and how much control I have over shaping my character’s narrative.
Your Background In Avowed Actually Matters
In many RPGs, roleplaying is an essential part of the experience, but as the genre advances, it can seem like the flexibility for players is gradually diminishing. However, Avowed stands out as a recent RPG that allows for a broad range of character creation, encompassing diverse backgrounds and dialogue options.
Apart from Baldur’s Gate 3, other games may not offer the same level of player freedom for quite some time, as it was rather exceptional in this regard.
Currently, I’m portraying a Court Augur, a rather mysterious and prophetic character who often appears distant or preoccupied, even a tad introspective and self-effacing. Yet, my character remains compassionate towards others’ hardships and maintains a relatively balanced demeanor. This aligns with the kind of person I imagine myself to be in a fantasy world, but it’s also the most ordinary character I could create. It seems everyone desires to play an unusual yet virtuous role.

In the game Avowed, the dialogue choices that align with your chosen backstory significantly impact the development of your character. When these choices are presented, I usually select them as they’ve been crucial in defining my character. I hope that other backgrounds will provide me with distinct conversation options, enhancing the roleplay possibilities in future playthroughs.
In The Flow Of Conversation
Additionally, I’ve chosen dialogue options that align with my character’s persona, however, there are numerous alternatives I’ve overlooked that had me chuckling at their sarcastic wit or sheer rudeness. This game allows you to act as a jerk, be cruel, or display apathy. There are even achievements for dishonesty or responding with violence through dialogue. The potential scenarios, initially, seem limitless. Such versatility is crucial in creating an RPG of this quality to engage players emotionally.
You could also bring some humor into our conversation if you’d like, even if it’s just a little touch. This way, I can get a taste of the witty humor from Obsidian Entertainment that made The Outer Worlds such an enjoyable experience for me.
Maybe the most compelling aspect is that Avowed’s dialogues don’t guide you step by step. There’s no method to manipulate conversations for your preferred result – not even skill-based dialogue options always lead to favorable results, and there are no signs pointing out what the appropriate response might be. I unintentionally missed an early side quest due to this.
In some instances, not every dialogue choice leads to a different outcome in Avowed; instead, many discussions tend to result in similar conclusions. This implies that you’ll need to pick your words wisely when engaging in conversation. What I adore about this approach is that it gives conversations a more natural and authentic feel, as opposed to requiring players to strategize extensively to achieve the best results.
Although Avowed may not seem like a flawless RPG, it certainly embodies the spirit of the genre. I’m fully immersed in role-playing, secure in the knowledge that my choices in dialogues won’t lead to a chain reaction of unforeseen consequences. Lastly, I no longer need to worry about metagaming every dialogue; I can simply live the character and experience the story unfold.
