Jack Black Has ‘Logged More than 100 Hours’ on Minecraft

Jack Black became “the most passionate player” on set, logging over 100 hours on Minecraft. 

During a chat with Variety, Torfi Frans Ólafsson, Mojang’s top content director, shared some insights about Jack Black and Minecraft. It was revealed that he had bought Xboxes and established personal Minecraft servers for the cast and team members to indulge in the game. Interestingly, among this group, it was Jack Black who showed the most enthusiasm, racking up more than 100 hours of playtime.

Ólafsson stated that during the filming of Minecraft, Jack Black displayed an extremely energetic and uncontainable behavior, and he has an unusual fascination with ‘lapis lazuli’ as he finds the name appealing. Notably, Jack Black frequently discusses lapis lazuli in the movie. For those who may be unfamiliar, lapis lazuli is a mineral ore used for various purposes in the game, such as enchanting items and creating blue dye.

Jack Black Almost Played a Talking Pig in A Minecraft Movie

During the same interview, Olafsson disclosed that initially, Jack Black was not set to portray Steve, but rather his character was a “talking pig”. Later on in the production process, it became clear that they required an expert and host for the role; therefore, it was decided that Black would take on the part of Steve instead. Olafsson further explained, “This isn’t our Steve or your Steve – this is Jack Black’s Steve.
