Jack Black Reveals the Next Video Game Adaptation He Wants to Appear In

Jack Black, known for his roles in movies based on video games, has expressed interest in joining the cast of a future Yakuza project. The Yakuza series, developed by Sega, includes nine core games plus several side stories, and has recently been adapted into a live-action show available on Amazon Prime Video.

I’ve been a huge Jack Black fan ever since School of Rock, and I loved him in Nacho Libre and Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny too! It was so great to see him in A Minecraft Movie as Steve, and honestly, he killed it as Bowser in The Super Mario Bros. Movie – that movie was a huge hit. Now, with The Super Mario Galaxy Movie coming out, he’s already brainstorming what video game he wants to tackle next, which is awesome! He just gets these roles.

Jack Black Wants to Be in a Live-Action Yakuza Adaptation

Actor Jack Black recently shared his dream video game role in an interview with ScreenRant. He expressed his desire to be in a live-action adaptation of Yakuza, jokingly suggesting Sega cast him as a larger American character if the opportunity arose. While the six-episode Like a Dragon: Yakuza series debuted on Amazon Prime Video in 2024 to a somewhat mixed reception, its future remains uncertain. Despite this, Black is eager to be involved, whether in a potential second season of the series or a future movie.

I’m interested in being involved! I’m not sure if there’s a role for someone like me – maybe a larger American character – but I’m open to discussion. Sega, please get in touch if you think I’d be a good fit.

The Yakuza (now Like a Dragon) series, while dealing with serious topics like the Japanese mafia, also includes funny and heartwarming scenes that reveal the complex personalities of characters like Kazuma Kiryu, Goro Majima, and Ichiban Kasuga. The games are full of interesting side characters, including foreign tourists. If Sega accepts the offer from actor Black, he could be a great addition to the next season, bringing some comedic relief to the story.

As we’ve already discussed, Black has appeared in several successful video game movies. A Minecraft Movie grossed over $961 million globally, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie earned an impressive $1.36 billion. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is also expected to be a big hit when released, demonstrating continued audience interest in quality video game adaptations. Black has been lucky to be involved in two incredibly popular franchises. While Like a Dragon: Yakuza didn’t perform as well initially, it still has the potential to become a major success with the right approach.

What’s Next in the Yakuza Franchise?

RGG Studio and Sega aren’t currently working on a new main Yakuza or Like a Dragon game after Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii releases in 2025. Their recent release, Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties (a remake of Yakuza 3 combined with a spin-off story), received mixed reactions. Their next major project is Stranger Than Heaven, an action-adventure game set across five Japanese cities, including recognizable locations like Sotenbori and Kamurocho. While Stranger Than Heaven isn’t directly part of the Yakuza series, it’s expected to have familiar elements. However, RGG Studio could surprise fans and reveal it’s actually another Yakuza game set in an alternate reality.
