As a lifelong admirer and follower of James Earl Jones’ illustrious career, I am deeply saddened by his passing. His voice was not just an instrument; it was a force that resonated through generations, leaving an indelible mark on popular culture. From Darth Vader’s ominous “I am your father” to the stirring tones of Mufasa in The Lion King, Jones’ performances have been an integral part of my childhood and adult life.

Sadly, the renowned actor James Earl Jones, best recognized for lending his voice to the iconic character of Darth Vader across numerous Star Wars films, series, and games, has passed away at the age of 93.

Ever since the early 2020s, I’ve been taking a break from show business – or rather, enjoying my well-deserved retirement. My last big screen appearance was as King Jaffe Joffer in the hilarious 2021 comedy “Coming 2 America,” starring none other than Eddie Murphy.

James Earl Jones Dead at 93

The legendary actor passed away at 93 years of age in the morning hours ET on September 9, The Associated Press reports, citing a confirmation from Jones’s agent, Barry McPherson. The actor is understood to have died at his home in Dutchess County, New York. The cause of his death has not been disclosed.

While best known for his iconic voice performance as Darth Vader, Jones was also an extremely accomplished actor beyond the Star Wars universe, boasting a career spanning seven decades. His legendary status is reflected in the fact that he is one of only 27 people who have collected the elusive EGOT, winning at least one Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony award over the course of their careers. Jones completed his EGOT in 2011, when he was presented a Lifetime Achievement award by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The rest of his EGOT accolades were all in competitive categories and include two Tony and two Primetime Emmy Awards.

In 2019, Jones delivered his last vocal performance as Darth Vader in the hit movie “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.” Three years later, he declared that he was letting go of his most recognized voice role. On this occasion, he granted the rights to his voice to an AI company based in Ukraine named Respeecher, with the intention of preserving the character beyond his own lifespan.

Respeecher’s voice replicating technology enabled Disney to recreate Darth Vader’s voice in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, without needing James Earl Jones. As more projects like this emerge, they will undoubtedly continue to expand the actor’s remarkable legacy.
