In essence, Superman serves as the foundation for the DC Universe (DCU), shaping the overall narrative of the franchise. Simultaneously, numerous DCU productions are underway at different stages, such as Peacemaker season 2, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Swamp Thing, among others. As one of the co-CEOs at DC Studios, Gunn is actively engaged in each of these projects; however, he’s only confirmed as a writer and director for Superman and a few episodes of Peacemaker season 2. Nevertheless, it seems Gunn is eager to tackle another DCU project.

On Reddit, Gunn disclosed that at present, he’s dedicating a considerable amount of effort to drafting his upcoming DC Studios venture ahead of time. Previously, he mentioned he had four distinct options for his next DC project following Superman, and it appears he has made a decision, though he didn’t reveal the details about this unnamed project. A Reddit user inquired about how Gunn manages his duties at DC Studios with Superman and Peacemaker season 2 in post-production. Gunn responded by stating that his focus is primarily on Superman and Peacemaker, but he also reviews the daily footage and offers suggestions for other DC Universe projects. Despite the heavy workload, Gunn pointed out that it’s less overwhelming than when he was directing.

It remains unclear if Gunn himself will take up the director role for this DC Studios project or pass on that duty to another filmmaker. Although Gunn’s scripts have been directed by others in the past, like the live-action Scooby-Doo films and Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead remake, he’s primarily been the one leading the way for most of his screenplays over the last two decades. Therefore, it wouldn’t be a first for Gunn to let another filmmaker lead this DC Studios project, but it would certainly be a departure from his recent pattern of involvement.

There’s much speculation among fans about what director James Gunn’s next DC project might be. Possibilities include movies like “The Authority” or TV series such as “Waller” and “Booster Gold”. However, some fans think they know what it will be: Either a sequel to “Superman” or another season of “Creature Commandos”. Although a second “Superman” film hasn’t been confirmed yet, the latter was renewed for a second season in December 2024.
