James Gunn’s Update On This Anticipated DCU Project

Summary

  • James Gunn is working on projects like Booster Gold but struggles with scripts’ quality.
  • Booster Gold film’s production is currently stalled due to the script not meeting Gunn’s standards.
  • Other DCU projects have been greenlit, and Gunn’s track record suggests Booster Gold may be produced eventually.

As a lifelong DC comics fan with a soft spot for underdog characters, I can’t help but feel a pang of both excitement and frustration when it comes to Booster Gold. James Gunn has shown us time and again that he’s not one to shy away from complex characters or unique storylines, which makes his struggle with the Booster Gold script all the more perplexing.

As a die-hard DC fan, I can’t help but feel exhilarated with the way the DC Universe is unfolding on the big screen! The array of characters that comic book enthusiasts yearn to witness in live action is as diverse and captivating as ever. Some fan favorites, like those who have already graced us or are lined up for their big debut, have been eagerly anticipated for quite some time.

With James Gunn now leading the DCU, there’s growing anticipation for a potential Booster Gold movie to materialize more swiftly than before. There have been numerous whispers about the progress of this film and possible actors for the roles. However, those hoping for its imminent release may be let down. In a recent interview, Gunn shared his current status on the Booster Gold project, suggesting he’s not overly satisfied with its progression at present.

Booster Gold Not Close To Hitting The Screen

Recently, I had a chat with the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, and they asked me point-blank about the status of a Booster Gold movie. To put it simply, I get why fans are eager for this character to grace our movie screens. Just like there’s buzz surrounding the project, it’s not hard to understand why.

When Gunn assumed control over DCU, he appreciated having the opportunity to bestow the recognition he believed these iconic figures – Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman – deserved. Yet, he also aimed to spotlight lesser-known personalities such as Peacemaker in television series or films. In this spirit, he embarked on a project centered around Booster Gold.

Nevertheless, when asked directly if Kumail Nanjiani had indeed secured the role of Booster Gold, Gunn seemed to pour doubts on the matter.

Gunn threw some cold water down on the whole thing.

Gunn said, ‘We’re not fully prepared with Booster Gold just yet.’ Essentially, we haven’t started working on it, and the scripts aren’t at the stage I desire.

And that really is where the problem comes into focus. Gunn has previously said that Booster Gold is one of the most requested movie or television show projects he’s come across since taking over the DCU. He understands that people who love DC Comics love Booster Gold and he wants to give them something that they will love when they see it on the screen.

Currently, he doesn’t seem to be ready or willing to discuss if anyone has been chosen for the role yet. This could be typical industry jargon used to keep secrets before an official announcement is made. However, it’s obvious that he understands the anticipation of DC Universe fans who eagerly want Booster Gold in a film, and this means he needs to get it right.

James Gunn’s Perfectionism Won’t Allow The Project Off The Ground Yet

Gunn clarifies that his position next to Booster Gold isn’t due to resentment or arrogance, but rather a commitment to ensuring everything is properly aligned.

I want to clarify that I’m not an overly meticulous or perfectionistic individual. I don’t obsessively control everything and I’m not always demanding perfection. However, when something truly resonates with me emotionally, as happened with Supergirl, Green Lanterns, and a few other projects (including one recently greenlit that I can’t discuss just yet), I feel it deeply. There are other projects in the pipeline that we’re working on, but they haven’t reached that same level of emotional connection yet. As for Booster Gold, he’s not quite there either.

Additionally, Gunn brought up two other ventures, namely Brave and the Bold and Waller, which have been frequently discussed but haven’t yet begun, as mentioned in previous discussions. This hints at an exciting prospect for DCU enthusiasts: a potential Booster Gold movie might actually come to fruition, signifying that it won’t be abandoned.

Gunn isn’t the type of person who discusses a project like Booster Gold casually; instead, he intends to bring it to life. His denial that he’s a control freak might be his way of reassuring DCU fans that he’s just as invested in the movie’s success as they are. The question now is not if Booster Gold will be made, but rather when. The identity of the actor portraying the character remains uncertain until filming begins.
