As a long-time fan of DC Comics and Wonder Woman in particular, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and apprehension following the recent updates from DCU chief James Gunn regarding the future of the iconic character in the new DC Universe.

James Gunn, head of DC University, has spoken out for the first time regarding the upcoming “Wonder Woman” initiative, leaving fans concerned about what this means for the iconic character within the franchise.

In January 2023, Gunn and Peter Saffran unveiled the initial lineup of DCU projects. Superman and Batman are set for new screen adaptations, but Wonder Woman, a renowned DC Comics character, hasn’t taken center stage yet. The only announced Wonder Woman project is “Paradise Lost,” a series focusing on her mythical homeland, Themyscira. Many anticipated that the show was already in production and would bring significant developments. Fans were not left hanging as Gunn shared some exciting news about the ongoing project.

The DCU head, Gunn, discussed the ongoing series projects during a Q&A session with fans. A fan inquired about the status of “Paradise Lost,” to which Gunn responded that nothing is officially in production until it receives the go-ahead (greenlight). He then listed the projects currently given the greenlight: Superman, Supergirl, Penguin, Peacemaker, Lanterns, and some animated projects. However, he emphasized that “Paradise Lost” and other titles are still being actively developed. Gunn explained, “Nothing enters production unless it’s been approved. At present, we have Superman, Supergirl, Penguin, Peacemaker, Lanterns, and a few animated projects underway. However, Paradise Lost, among others, is actively under development. It will move into production once we have scripts that meet our high standards and are ready to film – never before.” Furthermore, casting won’t commence until a project is officially approved.

James Gunn's Wonder Woman Update Is Disappointing But Important

Since Gunann made public the initial lineup of movies, fans have been eagerly anticipating how he would breathe new life into the entire DC Universe franchise. Previously reported was Patty Jenkins’ decision not to direct the third “Wonder Woman” installment, effectively marking the end of Gal Gadot’s tenure as the titular heroine. While it is unclear if Gal Gadot will reprise her role in the revamped DCU, it seems highly unlikely given the absence of an announced replacement. In place of a confirmed actress, Gunann might choose to introduce a young Wonder Woman to depict her origins anew. Fans have already been introduced to David Corenswet as the youthful Superman in this new DC Universe setup. This development underscores that we are entering a fresh era for both Gunann and the DC characters.

In the Wonder Woman comic books from DC Comics, the narrative titled “Paradise Lost” explores themes of deception and discord within Themyscira. This storyline highlights internal power struggles and tests Queen Hippolyta’s leadership, ultimately causing a civil war on Paradise Island. Caught between her commitment to her Amazonian sisters and her responsibilities beyond their shores, Wonder Woman must find a way to manage these complex tensions. DC Studios has the creative freedom to delve deeper into Themyscira’s rich mythology and shed light on its untold past events.

All Wonder Woman movies are available to stream exclusively on MAX.
